He was doing really well. Going for the phone was a bad idea. It seems a major lesson to learn here is only go for the phone when you are safe. Do not go for the phone and try to fight at the same time. I am sure this translates to shooting fight as well. Even if you can get help on the way, you will most likely either be able to get away, take down your enemy, or be down yourself before help arrives. Police can not be on every corner after all.
Running is the key. Two guys plus knife vs one guy are bad odds. The problem is that THOSE GUYS CAN RUN TOO. Maybe faster than you. Running full speed on an icy road like that while trying to look back once in a while to see if they're coming is a great way to trip and fall down. Then what? We still need empty hand skills. The thing is, in a weapon situation, the aim from the first blow must be to maim or kill. You may only get once chance to do that before the knifeman get one in. And one is too much. That is the problem with people who train martial arts/sports. This guy can fight but he didn't train with a the good old combatives mentality which is to kill or maim.
i hope you'll do these amazing and helpful advice videos for years. I cant and wont if not have to, walk beside a person. ik it sounds really stupid but especially if their hands are in their pockets or i cant see their pockets i get nervous and try to be awake to see whats going on around me, even if i live in a safe country i still do and will
A slight disagreement on one thing you said, which I'm sure you know well. If someone enters your safety zone in threatening manner you must go(attack) or you will be in an extreme disadvantage. Even though you technically threw the first punch.
I also do not understand why he didn't run off! Use the phone a distraction, like throwing it at knife guy. Tragic ending, if he didn't get medical care soon he probably didn't make it! Maybe he was a criminal too, who knows but he sure didn't deserve that.
John, thank you for illuminating the dark side of human nature through your educational videos. These videos motivated me to start taking skills in self defense more seriously.
john there are many times when starting the physical fight is the right thing to do, many times its obvious a physical encounter is imminent and waiting to get clocked first isnt the smart thing to do. and legally, in florida you can use force even deadly force in reaction to an aggravated assault (which unlike battery is non-physical)
