Wing Chun – The Science of Self Defence

As a martial artist, first and foremost, I’m not interested in “Wing Chun,” “tradition,” or “style.” I’m not interested in flashy acrobatics, winning tournaments, or what looks cool. I’m only interested in what works. What keeps you alive in real life and death fight situations? What is the most effective way to defeat one or many opponents with or without weapons? How is the human body best trained to become a master of self-defense? What techniques, drills, and concepts must become second-nature to ensure proper reaction and adaptation during the chaos of real-life combat? How can any system or style cover the literally infinite potential dangers faced? With so many different martial arts from all over the world, how can one separate the wheat from the chaff and discern which is the most effective? Wing chun is a very good fighting system but to say it is the best and compare mma fighting is totally unrelated. there is fighting cage type fights that have no holds bard and wing chun isnt the system used to win and when ufc first stared had verturally no rules and wing chun was not the system used to win. You are believing all your own hype . there are other all out arts and i have seen wing chun vs them and wing chun doesn't always. win lol . There is no alwasy. Krav maga like you mentions is another one like wing chung that works very well. If we are talking about winning lets just use 21st century tecnology like hey guns or weapons. Again i love wing chun and many other martial arts that work but to say this is the best sounds argent.

secondly SOOO much of the effectiveness of wing chun appears to rely on having super precise timing, bc I'm not seeing head movement nor body movement to avoid attacks. So if those hand traps don't work – you're gonna get hit. How often do these Wing chun guys go FULL speed and power? Until you do that, you're not working on real combat speeds and you're not deflecting an attack with the full, realistic body weight behind it (which of course is not as easy to deflect as sticky hands training will condition you to expect) — so how will all that partial speed and partial power timing training work against a full speed full weight/power street situation? I'm sure there's a place for wing chun, but even Bruce Lee abandoned it in favor of Jeet Kun Do, where you shed any allegiance to any style and select what works best. And when I watch the best fighters, I always notice they have transcended any particular style. Mayweather fights very long range wide base, extremely bladed typically, like a karateka for example.

B H says:

but…. where are the Wing Chun MMA champs? It looks too flat footed to me, and mostly useful for in the pocket fighting. If it naturally worked, boxers and more would naturally incorporate it more into their fights. But most hand trapping comes from further range than wing chun. And standing so square to an opponent severely limits your ability to use distance for defense or blading the body to protect the centerline. If it worked as well practically as it does philosophically, we'd already see people using it in MMA and more for a long time IMO. If it's effective, it surely would have successful practitioners in MMA competition — there's really no escaping that.

but what are u saying singing and playing all alone when an art dont' move like wt wc etc are only bullshit ….. i make you like a cola pasta wants to try come to italy my friend

XD arking says:

there is no strongest martial arts , only strongest person

george eng says:

respect the practitioner and stop put down the different style of martial art. Putting someone down is very difficult. someone who is determining to kill you and anyone who never fought someone with that mentality, you will lose or lose your life. In all respect your training will only give you an opportunity hopefully to survive that encounter.

blacksan56 says:

Them girls be fine tho real talk lmao.

Tomasz Neosapiens says:

you talk shit whoever you are , we practice groin strikes , eyes gauging , all the most painful and damaging points on the body , we just don't do it on sparing's , and you are not doing it either , so stop talking shit , each martial art will work different for different fighter ,and you are just virtue boosting

Harley Hughes says:

Love this vid. Just a note regarding the 'Center line'. We use it in contemporary dance, Steve Paxton introduced it to use as a tool for perfecting his contact improvisation style in the 1970's. Hes awesome, he also studied Akihito (think thats how u spell it) Defo gona check this out. Thanks Eric :)

Ar G says:

haha you got the STRIP MALL karate guys to validate your KARATE arguement!

Nicholas Aguilar says:

Interesting, all respect to Master Ip and other Wing Chun Masters, but I would not discredit other forms of Martial Arts when it comes to multiple attackers. The whole idea of the Martial Arts is to keep learning and growing with your training, yes the self defense aspect is emphasized, however, engaging in fights (even if multiple attackers are present) is not the idea. For example, if one trains Brazilian Jiu Jitsu the idea is controlling the distance of the attacker. As Master Helio Gracie stated, "the one who controls the distance wins the fight", "controlling the distance" could mean many things such as running or getting help in any away. Furthermore, with all due respect Wing Chun is not the only martial art that was created for the "smaller" person; Jiu Jitsu emphasizes this aspect as well, this was Master Helio's main philosophy. Which carries on to modern practitioners with the saying being in the bjj community "learn from a smaller person because their technique is stronger." Finally, why weren't there any statistics within this video on the likely hood of getting into a fight with multiple attackers? Yes, I know that this video is promoting Wing Chun (which I have no problem with) I am just bring up all the open claims that arise within the video. Finally, NO system is the best, this is why there are many forms of Martial Arts it's the philosophy and the self improvement that make you an effective martial artist.

martial arts is from Asia not all over the world.

Dombica Bombica says:

Also dont underestimate the real ninjutsu from Japan. Not the ones from Europe and America. Many bullshit there too.

Truth Seekers Farm says:

Man, I think I'd like to learn Wing Chun Eric. This is a great video brother. Peace man

JDK says:

I agree with the video as i practice WSL wing chun coming from Muay Thai and aikido background and competitive ring fighting I found wing chun to offer to me a complete self defence, soft and hard form, with the simplicity I also practice cheung tai chi as personally i believe in the chi energy and the 5 elements in wing chun I consider foot work and chi energy to be the most advance forms (this is my own personal view) coming from other martial art and fighting experience I don't believe in the taking the best from other martial arts, adapting this to your own abilities. One would be best to follow Bruce Lee's Jeet kune do, as this is his philosophy I believe if one chooses this way, then its best studying Jeet kune do, not to try to freelance this philosophy, Bruce Lee spent his life perfecting his philosophy and I doubt its something others can do the same in a few months on their own. My own personal opinion its best to master the skill of one martial art, than to be a jack of all trades and yet a master of none. Awesome video… I absolutely love wsl wing chun and wished I had found this before.

Ray F says:

Of course mma is for one on one fighting but if you can't win a fight with just one unarmed person then how do you expect to win a fight against multiple opponents with weapons? And wingchun's footwork is so static that doesn't stand a chance against one or more professional mma fighters.also an mma fighter has way more experience in fighting under pressure comparing to your average wingchun guy and if it comes to life and death they can also kick the groin, gouge the eyes, bite and snap the neck with the difference that since they are trained under pleasure they can get to the ideal positions for doing these things much faster than a wingchun guy.

Isabel Irizar says:

Who is the chinesse guy who appears many time at the video? red t shirt ? someone knows?

jtstar10 says:

Muay Thai for me! Thank you…. Cheers, Peace!!

Ryan Yii says:

5:33 lmao

Uzi Gadafi says:

Its about winning without fighting. and if you have to fight, it must work against everyone. not just this or that

BatonRouge StateOfMIND says:

I believe wing chun is a beautiful art. But it appears that you were only pointing out the flaws of every other art of the family tree as if wing chun had none. In Muay thai alot of the strikes of muay boran are not allowed in the sport of muay thai because it is not the intent to kill but to help each other develop into a wiser fighters. Muay boran is the ancient art of Thailand that the country's warriors used in defense of the homeland in the time of war during ancient times. Master Ip as portayed in so many movies never once dishonored or judged any other art. Master Bruce Lee after training under Master Ip discovered many holes in wing chun thus develoing His Jeet Kune do. He said it best be like water. Which means to adapt to not one singular art but many and to keep a open mind. Any fighter of any art who grows boastful or prideful defeat is unavoidable. STRENGTH AND HONOR. ✊
