Why You Don’t Shoot For The Head In Self-Defense

There’s a clip going around of a guy at the range drawing from concealment and putting fast rounds on target. Then a cop standing behind him says, “Yeah… but mine were all headshots.” And that comment exposes one of the biggest misunderstandings people have about self-defense shooting. Headshots are not the flex people think they are. Anybody can hit a head if you give them enough time. But self-defense is not about taking your time and stacking perfect holes on a paper target. It’s about stopping a threat as fast as humanly possible. So I put it on a timer. Headshots vs. center mass. At close distance, the headshots were slower and messier. At ten yards, pushing for the head caused rounds to come completely off target. And in real life, a miss is not just a miss. It’s a wall. A car. A house. Or an innocent person who had nothing to do with the fight. That’s why responsible self-defense training focuses on acceptable accuracy, combat accuracy, and putting fast, effective hits into the area most likely to stop the threat. The goal is not to kill. The goal is to stop the threat and go home. Sponsored by Otis Technology. I'm former SWAT. I trained for years, nearly every day, two to center mass, one to the head. This gets two easy rounds into him to slow him down, a head shot in case he was wearing body armor. I was forced to shoot two bad guys when three of them jumped my partner and I in a dark parking lot. We were outnumbered and had to REact, as we couldn't see them until they fired. My partner was also swat and he did the same thing to the one that popped up in his field of fire. It turned out they were cartel trigger guys, and they were well equipped, including level 3 body armor. If we hadn't ended with a head shot, chances are very good one or both of us would have been hit. I would argue that head shots do have value, but I admit you have to train regularly and effectively to keep this skill from degenerating.

two in the chest… one in the head…

Why this is even a discussion proves how screwed up America really is.

The people who hide behind trained mercenaries want to tell everyone else what does and does not Constitute Selfdefense.

Other info to consider: The skull has fewer holes. The rib cage has lots of gaps. Butllets deflect off bones. Sometimes lower caliber rounds in the .22 to .25 cal range can track along the outside of the skull under the scalp. It happened to my best friend who took a small caliber shot to the head at point blank. Raging headache but no penetration. Thank heavens.

@cjjones4824 says:

“Why didn’t you just shoot the gun out of his hand?!”

“You should’ve just shot him in the leg.”

Statements like that always translate in my head to; “I’ve never shot a gun, let alone a gun in a high stress/high adrenaline situation.”

@tomtierney3812 says:

Shoot for whatever you're most comfortable with. I'm training and carrying a fairly new hand gun. The ammo I started carrying, only one in the head will be more than enough. Thats what I train with and carry. If I should miss, I'll go for center mass body. But unless they're wearing serious body armor, one, maybe two at most will be plenty. I don't shoot to wound. Thats the way I was taught by the best.

Efficiency matters…

@lloydmwanza2668 says:

When i go to the range I practice head shots as fast as possible only because it is more challenging and if i can draw and hit a tiny paper head quickly then i should be able to hit the body quick too

@lenonkitchens7727 says:

I mean, yeah, if I'm taking my time. I can fire rounds from 7-10 yards until my gun breaks and never miss a head shot. But that's at the range, and using time I won't have in a self defense situation. I'm currently at the 3rd stage that you described. Trying to dump a mag into the body as fast as possible from low ready without missing. Any other situation I'm doing 3-6 inch groups all day long depending on ammo and distance. My main challenge for getting back on target is losing my perfect grip after four or five shots. Trying to work on that now.

I was told start at the pelvis and keep shooting as the muzzle rises.
Nothing stops someone running up on you like a broken pelvis.

@OGPAPI says:

I don’t agree I was in a home invasion I got shot first my return fire was a head shot

2 to the chest one to the head.

You should’ve used the Murtaugh “diplomatic immunity” scene 😂

@Lazzzymedia says:

Cops dont have to worry about stray shots hitting bystanders, its call immunity. They are the sovereign citizens.

@TheRawTruthUntold says:

Ok but What if that other person is now a zombie and we all know the only way to kill a zombie😮

@ryateo1 says:

Two in the pump one in the processor. Army regulations. Pretty sure that was verbatim too😉
And you haven't crossed the obj yet, throw some loose change on them on your way by.

@bwright6767 says:

Most cops can barely qualify for a CWP class. They also rarely know their own state gun laws. So that moron in the back should keep his mouth shut.

@kenny6055 says:

Thanks Colion for video and LEO’s with comments. In the military the only time I shot a gun was boot camp in 1977, so I been shooting a bunch since then but no experience like ya’ll. I carry everywhere I go and keep one/two close at home. Thank you and God bless you

@1Five1Garage says:

ALWAYS center mass. More vital organs in that larger target.

@patrickoverstreet2372 says:

Shoot them in the pelvic bowl please. As a combat medic there is nothing anyone can do to save someone shot in the pelvis, nothing.

@billb81 says:

As always their is also this thing called background . Head shots leave a lot more room for error .
