Wasp Spray VS Pepper Spray for Self Defense?

People have long talked about the benefits of using wasp spray instead of using pepper spray or OC spray for self defense. In this video I talk about the good and bad points of choosing to use wasp spray over OC spray or pepper spray. I have to say right up front that I am a bog proponent of not using wasp spray as I think there are several significant downsides. I pulled the Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for Spectracide Wasp & Hornet Killer and Sabre Pepper Spray. Spectracide is listed as non-irritating to skin and eyes. Pepper spray is listed as SEVERE Eye, Skin, Respiratory and Digestive irritant. I did not research other brands of wasp spray, but this leading brand is so mild, I am in amazement of how it is so effective on wasps. The active ingredient in all pepper spays is the same (OC).

I have used pepper spray twice. Once on a mad dog and it dropped him in his tracks. The other time was on a mad human and after a half of a 6 oz can point blank into the eyes (holding his head still while spraying, it made him madder. Recommend pepper spray only as a non-lethal force tool with a lethal force back up on humans.

wasp spray is asking to sued to hell and back because it can permanently blind a person no joke there's a reason there's the warnings in big red writing on the thing and its horrible for the environment since it kills all insects and right now were losing bee's left and right the best thing for bugs like wasps is original dawn dish soap and high pressure water nozzle I found that to work best for things like wasps in hard to reach places the dawn dish soap is for after it finishes off any survivors and can you do a video on what raw foods not to eat during a SHTF because I know raw green potatoes are poisonous I use the saber 3 in 1 its pepper spray, tear gas, and uv marker in one.

Thanks JJ. My wife still refuses to get a handgun for self defense. She has a small canister of 10% OC (the max that Michigan law allows) that she carries in her purse. I've been thinking of upgrading her to the Mace Pepper Gun with the same 10% OC. My concept is that it looks somewhat like a 38 special, has a meager little light (both, to me seem as possible deterrents), and can spray 8-10 times pretty accurately between 10 and 20 feet per cannister. Any thoughts on this product?

I didn't even know this was a thing! Good job, though, for the effort of debunking ridiculous bad ideas.

Jason Mcdonald says:

Totally off topic, defensive ammo do you carry or recommend? I'm thinking of trying out Sig's 124gr offering, 9mm of course. Thanks JJ… also, oc gel if you can find it, I think it's more difficult for a bad guy to clear out of his eyes. Take care.

You don't know this, but you are talking to the original 50 CENT, so named after taking a roll of pennies in fist to the neighborhood bully and making change on his a__ on a school bus (yup, the roll busted, adding to the effect)… LOL He lost 3 teeth and I got a really cool cast to brag about… ahahahaha 35

Love the videos. Could you please do a video on your opinions on the best first handgun for self-defense? Based off of your experience as a law enforcement officer.

Oh man when you said wasp spray I thought that was the brand name!
Put my vote to pepper spray at least they have holders for those cans.

BillieBird Outdoors says:

All excellent points JJ… I always have pepper spray on me even here in the wilderness. You never know what you'll run into out here! What was the 6 P's? Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers? :)~

I've seen this brought up numerous times over the past couple of years. People advocating using wasp spray as a defensive means are only asking for trouble, in my opinion. The product is not designed as a defensive means against humans. Also, legally it could be a potential issue due to the invalid use of the product (and potential laws against it's use against humans). Civili litigation doesn't need 'beyond a reasonable doubt' and thus could be severely damaging to anyone who uses wasp spray and is sued because of it.
Good to keep this discussion current for anybody out there new to self-defense means.
