The self defense myth that just won’t go away

Q&A with the coach. Palm striking the nose will not push nasal bones into the brain.

Comments

Magnum Dong says:

My dad actually knew someone who killed a dude doing it. So it is possible. But that was a freak accident.

Dwane Anderson says:

I could force your nasal bones into your brain… with a .45 ACP.
The reason the palm strike doesn't work is because, if one were to push your nasal bones up into your head, they would just wind up in your frontal sinus cavities. This would be very unpleasant, but it won't damage your brain.

RELENTLESS SELF DEFENSE AND STRENGTH says:

You could punch them so hard in the nose it crushes there nose and skull then they die

Alden White says:

I think that eople think that's true because they don't know how skulls are structered.

Xin PIano says:

I had a coworker insisting this was true and I just asked her “have you ever heard in the news or in fighting sports someone dying from having their nose bone impale their brain?” She stopped talking about it 😂

NaeMuckle says:

If you palm strike someone at the moment they sneeze the combined force is enough to begin a nuclear fission reaction.

James Fitzsimmons says:

I suspect this originated as a Mom myth to keep kids from punching each other in the face that took on a life of its own.

Nikolaos Mandamandiotis says:

IF Mas oyama , mike tyson and bruce willis could do it so can you now go out there and train!😂

Mikigal shou says:

I remember this rumor from when i was a kid

JoeGuy says:

Started learning boxing some months ago and back then I had that worry of taking or throwing a bad punch, glad to hear it’s just a myth, now I can throw uppercuts with no worries of accidentally killing someone with one punch 😅

MGTOW SOLDIER says:

Chin palm stike..cupped hand thrown like a reverse uppercut…works….I put some one through a plate glass door .with it while working as a bouncer…..its in the original defendu …fairburn sykes…military manuals..fairburn learnt his trade in hong kong and shanghai…coincidently..

Tsunami Wave says:

Imagine evolving for millions of years to have a protective bone around your brain just for a point on your very punchable face to act as a literal off switch.

B R says:

Egyptians used to go through the nose with a tool to pull out the brain for mummifying a deceased person

So, one wonders if somehow somewhere the bone of your nose or weapon could enter the brain through your nose with a hand strike

That could be where this myth came from if plausible at all

Carl Anderson says:

Ah, the myth of the cheesecloth brainpan. Thanks for tackling this one

SteveBodi says:

Just subscribed to your channel. Found it thanks to another YouTuber I subscribe to posting a link to your channel on twitter. There are so many bad self defense videos on YouTube by "experts" . This channel is a great counter to that. Also, if I had a nickel for every damn time someone asked me about the nose bone/brain thing… I wouldn't be rich but I would have a lot of nickels. I remember it being a thing when I was kid in the 1970s. And it was already an old story then. Another urban legend that needs to die is the "hands registered as deadly weapons" thing.

Samuel Shin says:

Due to the fact that I'm as strong as Over Monitor and much stronger than The Presence, when I flat palm you in the face, every particle will break down to sub atomic particles and even those sub atomic particles will fuse into fused muons than turn into a black hole. Than the hawkings decay would have the black hole disappear instantly. You would cease to exist from all multiverse. In all seriousness though, the reason why sucker punches or pushes are devastating to innocent unaware bystanders is not because of the punch or push itself, but rather because they are unsuspecting they easily fall. That fall could easily permanently injure or even kill them due to smashing their skull against the hard concrete.

Anthony Lane says:

It might work…

If you hit the nose with a sledgehammer.

itchykami says:

It would be a very poor bit of evolution to make someone able to reliably die from a normal strike to the face.

Steel Mongoose says:

I always wondered what "bone of the nose" was in a position to be pushed into the brain. The sphenoid and ethmoid bones fit together to help form and protect the brain case. The cartilage and flimsy bones forward of that can't really be driven through the thicker, heavier, and strangely angled bones behind them any more that you can drive a potato chip through a cinder block.

Anything that can smash their way through those bones is simply crushing the skull with overwhelming penetrating kinetic energy, not driving something flimsy through something substantial.

ShoRyuBarbie says:

Didn't you know? Every single Pancrase fight ever ended with a fatality. It was basically a race to who could land the palm strike to the nose first.

Essence Of Kali says:

self defence senarios in not always that you have to save your life from a psycho muderer. sometimes your drunk brother wanna throw a haymaker at you and a light palm push to the nose or face will disorient him enough so that the haymaker doesnot lands on your face and you can go grab his waist with his arms stuck in like a wrestler and çalm him down. this way you did not hurt him but you controlled the situation.

bob mcbobson says:

I guess everyone has their own silly beliefs, like you with Mormonism. oooooooooohhh shots fired

Kachinchay says:

If in doubt, don't forguet to re-stomp the groint
