Q&A- Best folding knife for self defense?

While I don’t carry a knife for self defense.. I explore the question of- if you’re able to survive the initial attack, which knife gives you the best chance…

Interesting video, Voodoo. Since 99.9% of my anticipated knife use is not
for self defense, I don’t think I would ever carry a blade designed to
excel at that like the hawkbill Karambit. It’s just too specialized for my
taste and situation. Maybe I’d feel differently if I lived in a bad part of
town.
Now the wharncliffe blade is another story since I could see that knife
having enough utility for most of my current EDC knife use. It’s much more
generalized.
One question I have: What are your thoughts on assisted-opening knives?
Based on your video it seems they still don’t match the deployment speed
(and # of steps) that the wave delivers. Any relevant benefits/drawbacks to
them?

A knife fight is one of the most terrifying situations I can imagine. One
thing I will say about the hawkbill blade is that it looks intimidating.
One would hope that being able to rapidly deploy a nasty looking blade
would make an attacker do a fast cost-benefit analysis and decide his
assault ain’t worth it.

I recently watched your review of CRKT Heiho. I have been thinking about
getting this knife for self defense. I now carry a RAT1. The Emerson is
out of my price range. Is there a reason the CRKT Heiho was not included in
this video?

Durakken says:

You missed 1 thing…
You are assuming an attack from the front where as an attack will often
come from the back and push you into a wall so you are facing away from
your attacker, against the wall…

I have firearms. The only time I have had occasion to consider deadly
force with a firearm was when I was in uniform and there was somebody else
in uniform paid by another nation that was told to attempt deadly force
against me. I have carried an object with sharpened metal in my pocket or
on my belt since I was allowed to by permission from my parents at age
10. The exceptions to that time frame is while I was in bootcamp and
while riding on a commercial aircraft. I have yet to encounter a situation
where I need to brandish or threaten another person with a blade. I do
utilize a blade several times every day for utility tool purpooses. A
utility blade will serve the limited function of sharp force injury if I
happen to require that in some unforeseen circumstance. That is my humble
opinion. If I needed to say cut seatbelts for an on the job purpose I can
see buying a specialized blade that would do that the best. The limited
times that I have confronted someone I didnt think to deploy a knife. I
used forward motion, and aggressive action to make them blink first. A
group of 5 individuals burglurized my neighbor’s house. 2 were in the
vehicle and 3 were inside of the house. The 2 in the car decided that they
needed to be someplace else in a hurry. The 3 in the house fled in any
exit available. One went out a first floor window, one went out the back
door and the last one went out a second story window., I was wearing arctic
grade Carhart Bib coveralls and Jacket. I looked larger than life. The
police report said that they “saw the big guy show up and decided they
wanted to run”

great video v6 love watching it. overall even though the emerson has some
draw backs i think the wave is one of the fastest way to deploy your knife.

A folding knife for self defense? Where do those guys live? My knive gets
used to cut open straw bales and the like, and to cut off loose parts
horses hoofs.

great vid, and even greater to see you back! :)

Blake Adamson says:

karambits only have 1 way of attacking which is a slash id prefer a large
tanto knife that can slash both ways or stab

Reviresco says:

Weird. I swear this didn’t show up in my subscriber feed. I just happened
to catch it in the Youtube email before I deleted it.

Jake J says:

What’s the difference between a tactical knife and a knife for self
defence?

MpowerdAPE says:

The ring feature on the fox karambits scare guys like me…. i.e. guys
who should be hand models for engagement rings. totally with you on your
choice.
