Traditional Japanese Jujutsu is the best martial art for self defense, of course.

@Liam1991 says:

So, if sport martial arts are the best for self defense, when do they teach you how to defend against,

•Multiple attackers
•Domestic abuse
•Defending against weapons
•If legal in your country, learn how to use weapons
•Scenario training
•De-escalation skills
•Awareness training
•The pre and post fight
•Have some understanding about your country's self defense law, just in case you have to justify your actions in court

For DJ to do that was cool as hell. I loved watching it. You are absolutely correct.
But knives change everything. The “world self defense championship” guys ALL got “killed” by the guy with the “knife.”
Be careful. As Han Solo said, “don’t get cocky!”

@bloodwynn says:

Man, you are exagerrating a lot! Size and strenght still plays a huge role when it comes to grappling – that's why they use weight categories in those sports as well. I rolled with people 20-30 kg heavier than me and it is freaking overwhelming! Mighty Mouse is just exceptionally incredible fighter and he was able to overcome this. It is a horrible idea to form general statements based on an exceptional case of an exceptional human being.
Lighter striker can also beat heavier striker if he is much better or is gifted with a lot of punching power. It's not bjj-exclusive thing.

@manjitheerratic5127 says:

Grappling gives chances for smaller fighters to win against bigger ones, totally agree
BJJ is the best, I have a different idea. I see two questionable things which I don't have high regard in BJJ
To begin this, grappling is a good choice if:
1- You are smaller than your attacker
2- You defend against one unarmed attacker
3- You don't want to injure your attacker
But why I don't prefer BJJ alone for self-defense ( just me, I don't discourage anyone from training BJJ ):
1- Pulling guard is something isn't "martial". Sitting down during attack for what purpose ?
2- BJJ promotes the idea that top and bottom positions are equal. Is it good to be in the bottom position on the street when now you have to face ground and pound ?

By the way, the fact which Demetrious ( along with his exceptional physical attribute ) is a GOAT in MMA with BJJ isn't a great point to prove BJJ is the best martial art for self defense even grappling as whole.

Idk judo/sambo + american collegiate wrestling is a supreme combo. Maybe throw some bjj and additional boxing if want to take it to the next level.

Bjj is fun and addictive as hell tho. It is a kino sport

@MasakanSolaris says:

I dont know…having jiu jitsu as the core of your combat strategy seems counter intuitive regardless of your size.

Like there are plenty of bjj practitioners who end up getting conpletely stumped when the other guy just doesnt olay their game and so they just end up looking like a flailing toddler.

Honestly the methodology only seems to work against someone who is just looking for an easy mark and doesnt know what they are doing, and while this will likely be a good chunk of self defence encounters, personally i wouldn't train just for those situations.

Also I'd rather do an even 30/30/30 split between grappling clinching and striking with the last 10 for weapons..gotta stay well rounded.

@marcinm5830 says:

Claiming that ju jitsu is the best self-defense system based on an extremely talented fighter simply makes no sense. Mirko Crocop, in his prime, also used kickboxing to destroy everyone, and an ordinary guy can be compared to the elite players. I normally train 2-3 times a week for 1.5 hours. and the best ones live by training. so comparing an ordinary guy to an elite warrior is like comparing a Kia Picanto to a Paganini Zonda.

@brianrahuba6919 says:

This sport wouldn't be my go to defense. Why in the name of God would I want to hold on to someone that I should be getting away from ? If your talking true self-defense correct ? Listen I dont start nothing with nobody but go ahead bjj guy as you end up having a major artery cut or a couple of other stabs wounds . If they left it alone Japanese Jujitsu was just fine . Closest to a complete fighting system without cross training ….. bjj keep it a sport . Its already water downed enough plus its not so exclusive anymore…..

Mighty Mouse vs Popeye The Sailor next match 😁😁
