You've seen me says:

Hey Jason what do you think about using a 22lr for self defense?

The Stoned Videogame Nerd says:

327 Federal Magnum anyone??? 😉

The Stoned Videogame Nerd says:

This Question depends on "Is your enemy likely to have a rifle ?" Cause if the Answer is yes…the danger that he shows you his Flank with downward ellbow is very high (rifle shooting stance…..and then you have the worst case scenario of 6 layers of clothing and a Armbone before the Bullet can reach the Vitals….in that Scenario you need 9mm para or stronger…
BUT when its not likely that the Enemy has a rifle…when its likely he stands frontal to you… a 25 acp does the Job
So for most civilian scenarios a 25 acp is enough…but i think there is a even better choice…a 32. acp with lehigh defense Bullets…they have a 50 gr Copper which has the FBI Requirements for Penetration, better than many 9mm Bullets.
And its still a Gentleman sized Pistol 😉

The toughest guys I've known, on both sides of the law, bona fide bad asses and life takers, walked around with 38 snubbies in their pocket. Or tucked into a waistband.

OK. So how is it that the American firearms community has popularly embraced the idea that you need to be armed like ISIS, the Medellin Drug Cartels, and the Russian Mob are gonna come busting down your door? Is this the triumph of firearms marketing? Yes, there are criminals in America and no place is 100% safe. But most people will like their lives without never seeing a home invasion. Unless you have a genuine firearms collector's affection, which I 100% support, there is no reason to keep a stockpile large enough to equip a platoon. It kills me to go to the deep south and see 300 lb guys talking about how vital their 2nd Amendment rights are to survival, but a heart attack and diabetes will fell them long before any common criminal will. Or preppers spending money to prepare for the apocalypse which they can more usefully spend on retirement investing. It is far more likely they'll have to sell that bunker and equipment to fund their old age then they'll have an apocalypse.

I'm not saying you shouldn't own guns or prepare for disaster. But if it becomes an obsession along the lines of beanie babies you're hurting yourself for no good reason.

Christopher Bias says:

I venture to say that in most situations the mere presentation and discharge of a firearm is enough to defend against most regardless of what type of firearm, whether the round hits or not. I'm not saying just flash it and don't always shoot to kill, but most perps simply aren't prepared for their potential victim to be packing. Always shoot to kill for the one who is ready though, and you'll never know which one he is.

Gal says:

can you talk about how should a person defend himself in countries who don't allow guns?

nic 223556 says:

I think it's a good rule of thumb to think that the best pistol to have in a self defense situation is the one that you have on you, and that you use your pistol as a way to get to your rifle. That said I think you should look at police and military what they choose as their pistols and they all tend to be double stack polymer 9mm's. So that is probably the best choice/compromise for a person to have in a self defense situation.

Bubba Blackmon says:

One thing to consider is that in a lot of states a concealed carry permit only allows you to carry one gun. The "New York reload " is actually illegal. Be sure to check laws in your state. The most important point Jason made is "what you will carry every day." 100 % compliance is a must. We cant predict when bad things will happen.

Jacob Graham says:

I carry two pistols on me with two backup magazines each, the second gun is mostly if a person i trust with a gun does not have theirs on them and i can give them one if needed, also in case i need to draw left handed or main gun for some reason does not work

Ghost Shadow says:

how many shots you need depends on how bad you shoot, I've seen a cop totally miss target at 20 feet with more than half of his shots so he would need to carry 2x as much ammo.
on my person 20 to 30 rounds in vehicle 200 rounds if I have 45 acp/colt have 4 boxes of ammo in car.
I know a guy that wished that he had brought less ammo, his truck caught on fire and he had packed couple thousand rounds into it.
I've had slide separate on early gen glock, that isn't something to fix in the field and frame is too light to even do any damage if you throw it at someone.
Brand new Chiappa revolver the cylinder locked up with 3rd round fired, took 2 blocks of wood and rubber mallet to remove cylinder to remove remaining live ammo to send it in for warranty.

alcoyot says:

Heard about a recent story that happened in LA. A Hispanic guy gets mugged by a couple of crips and he has to kill both of them. They find out where he lives and send a whole posse to his home and fire bomb it. Gangs are what I'm most worried about. Often they will spend full time casing out neighborhoods where you wouldn't think they would be.

thenotorioussk says:

that is quite the job requirement – must be legally ccw'ing

ImpalerGaming says:

I'd say one mag in the gun and one side mag
