FMJ vs JHP for self defense

This topic has come up a few times now while talking to some people. So I thought I would make a video and discuss the important reasons for owning a good se…

Jarhead6 says:

I agree bro! I do stock on FMJ because I can buy American Eagle (50
rounds) for about 13.99 vs. 25 bucks. Training is the key…double tap,
failure to stop drills, etc!

JayXX88 says:

Those self defense rounds use powder that doesn’t flash as much either so
you retain night vision. If you’re in California you should have tried to
convince him that if you can only have 10 rounds in a magazine you want it
to be the deadliest 10 rounds known to man – yet legal.

Knives, Guns, & Gear says:

I carry Federal HST’s or Critical Defense. As far as practice, I shoot fmj.
I do make sure my weapon will fire my SD load reliably, but fmj is best for
practice since it’s so much cheaper.

chapmaker46 says:

good points,,i have hp in my carry gun always,,,i practice about once
amonth with hp but that gets real pricey ….

ethan pham says:

You have more than ten rounds in one place man….. You better be careful
or your local pd or even your local ATF department put the crack down on
you. Haha just kidding but yeah the hollow points are more expensive
because they cause more damage.

willied88m says:

Great video I carry with federal hydra shock for my concealed carry pistol
what your opinion on that round

rls303 says:

Straight hp’s in my pistol, in my backup mag i stagger them from
HP/FMJ..Good video

Gun Enthusiast says:

I stock up on FMJ …I do have JHP not many boxes. …good vid bro.

motorman 0057 says:

Great video,it comes down to this ,do you really want to kill someone who
breaks into your house?do they have a gun?if i shoot them in the head with
a FMJ that would kill them or just shoot them in the leg.if your guns are
locked up you have to get them, then witch magazine FMJor JHP bullets are
loaded, also i read a artical that in the winter the person has a coat or
jeans and the JHP bullets sometimes donnot penetrate the heavy clothing

TheALOwens says:

For me, FMJ is for the range and prepping (due to cost). HP is for carry.
Great video, Brother!

FringeSniper says:

Training will self defense ammo can get really expensive but I have agree
that hp are more lethal and are often loaded hotter.

GunCrazy81 says:

Great job my friend! I like to keep a little of both around

Girls Like Guns, Too says:

Sure, an FMJ round can kill a person, but also the one behind. For out in
the public AND in my house, I cannot have overpenetration (I have shared
walls where I live). I plan on shooting a box of the self defense ammo I
choose every so often to make sure I don’t have any issues with it.

504 Dirt Dart says:

I don’t see at as an either/or scenario. HPs are the primary (this is all
Dirt Dart philosophy) projectile because it is designed to makeup for the
shortcomings of not being a .50 BMG. “I’ll just do headshots” is not
really feasible in a self-defense scenario for all kinds of different
reasons, not the least of which is that when (not if) you miss, the
projectile is going to continue down range. That being said, I carry backup
FMJ which I would use in any kind of barrier-defeat situation. It’s still
not .50 BMG, but it’s not going to shatter in 50 pieces when it hits
something hard.

metaltrooper62 says:

Great video. I practice with both FMJ and my personal defense rounds. It’s
good to practice with both just because the FMJ and the JHP will have
slight differences that I have found when shooting at targets. Even
different brands of JHP will have slight differences. If you can keep a
group 6 inches or less in the kill zone at 15 yards or less then you’re
good to go. Most self defense situations are going to be less than that if
it’s a home invasion.

MCKwilly says:

good stuff, i think the RIP is the gimmick, while it will do more “damage”
and is pretty neat.. i think a HP will do just fine, there is some talk
about having the RIP might not look good for ya in a legal situation

Driver of All says:

Excellent Video and a very necessary subject. I need to invest in some
atomics too. Those sound as they do the same as the RIP claim to do.

Wolf Diamond says:

I have FMJ and JHP; got all the bases covered. :)) Good vid!

Check out this video on YouTube:

derplinkster says:

whats your choice?

zonseeker 137 says:

Most people do not think things through. If you don’t use HP rounds in your
home you may shoot the very family member your trying to protect or kill
an innocent bystander outside trying to defend yourself .

Mike Campbell says:

Just the kick in the butt I needed to go get some JHP ammo. All I have is
FMJ. My new gun seems to shoot any ammo and my old one wouldn’t.

MCKwilly says:

The Daily Shooter talkin bout 9mm

treesablowin says:

Good video, I use critical defense or DRT frangible in the 9/45, for the
LCR Gold Dot.

nelsonboy707 says:

I use JHP in my defense guns and yes I spend the extra money to test them
too. If you’re gonna use FMJ stick with .45acp.

GrOuNdZeRo7777 says:

Kind of sad to think that we have rounds loaded routinely in our pistols
designed to kill but if we don’t it opens us up to attack from the
assailant, law suits and sometimes even the law, Unfortunately we can’t set
our guns to stun…
But if I ever had to use it (and trust me, I WOULD use it if the lives of
my family or my self were in danger!) I got my trusty M&P loaded up with
Federal Gold Dot just for the occasion! FMJ has been routinely criticized
by servicemen and women for not stopping the bad guys, Especially not in
the 9mm pistols! I would use it in a pinch but for everything else, Federal
Gold Dot and Hornady VMAX for my rifles.

mememojo says:

full metal jacket is good for if a shooter(s) inside a car or something so
good for penetration on metal and several bodies per projectile.

The Daily Shooter says:
derplinkster says:

shot placement important . yes expensive but home defense or carry great
option not over penetration great vid thanks for sharing.
