Had to use bear spray in a very similar situation against a German Shepherd. Right up the snout and repelled it instantly. Unfortunately OC spray is illegal in my country (Canada) but bear spray isn't so I carry it whenever I'm in any type of outdoor setting.
I used to carry spray when i was younger, but there is the chance of it jamming, so now I carry an ASP. My experience with big tough dogs in full attack mode is that body shots don't work but a strike to the head will send them off whimpering.
I carry a POM with the pocket clip. Almost used it when i was chasing some coyotes off my property. One of them squared up to me for a second, but he ran off before i sprayed him.
not going to lie those were not big dogs i won't need OC. good stern kick to the head always worked for me. and like with OC spray the 2nd dog would back off won't want none of that. but i'd rather someone mace my dogs then kick them, so 10/10. I find making a weird loud noise at them while charging is 90% effective. the 10% got kick to the face. 100% effective in those cases. most charge but stop short and just bark. but a large group of actual big tough breeds. OC all the way. or hand to hand and die a sweet viking death being ripped apart by dogs, but maybe takin a few with you while you battle them. heheee.
I carry a Sabre Red 1.3 MC pepper spray on my person and a Byrna in my car. I also buy POM by the bulk and pass them out for free to realtors (I’m a home inspector) and to women I see who may need it
