Welcome to Lesson #3 in your Self-Defense Basics Course! The short version–stand up straight and take a deep breath!
The long version? Watch the video! đ
âșThank you for LIKING AND SHARING this video with someone you love! Make sure you watch all the lessons in this course!
Now, for some thoughts from Lesson #3…
It may not be a fancy stance or a fighting stance, but you are ALWAYS in a stance. But is how you are sitting or standing RIGHT NOW putting you in a good position to think, move, and defend yourself or not?
Here’s the thing… thereâs really no point learning how to punch and kick if you havenât mastered sitting and standing yet. A tense and crooked body means throwing tense and crooked punches!
So, before you think about mastering strikes, chokes, and submissions… try mastering your posture. Sit up, stand up, and fill the space you were BORN to fill.
Here’s why… if you hold yourself smaller than you really are, you look weak and afraid. That’s exactly who a bad guy is looking for to beat and abuse!
Instead, stand tall and keep your eyes up. Don’t be afraid to smile and say hello to people. Those are the signs of confidence and courage… most bad guys don’t want to deal with powerful people!
Of course, it’s not always easy to stand tall. When we’re upset, stressed, intimidated, angry, scared, or in pain, our posture shrinks. Our breath changes, too. It might even stop!
So, try this–think of your body as a hot air balloon. When it feels like life is folding you up and tying you down, use your breath as the fire to fill yourself back up.
Hey– did you know the word “inspire” literally means to breathe in? That’s right–the secret to inspiration… is inspiration! đ
I know that standing up straight and taking a deep breath donât sound like flashy lessons, but I promise you, when it comes to self-defense and living the best life possible, theyâre both crucial. I want you to recognize that every time you straighten up or take a deep breath to fill your space, you’re practicing martial arts.
Remember this–you are a creature of this earth just like any other. You have a right to be here. So, donât let anything or anyone shrink you.
Train yourself all day, every day to remember how brave and powerful you really are!

Knowing basic self-defense rules could save your life one day. Hopefully youâll never have to use any of these tips in real life, but itâs better to be safe than sorry.
Remember that a flat open hand can be just as effective in a fight since this type of blow will come as more of a surprise.
If the attackers have used duct tape to tie your hands up, thereâs a way out. You can actually tear it apart pretty easily: raise your hands above your head, and then thrust them down with a lot of force. This method will work even if your hands have been bound behind your back.
Remember to hit the attacker as hard and fast as you can. If you take too long deciding what to do or where to aim, your attacker will figure out your intentions and get even madder.
When you were a kid, did you ever play âspiesâ or make up some code words or even a secret language? If you take your code-writing to the next level, your rescuers could even find out the direction youâve been taken or the exact place you are. You could invent code words for certain highways or directions and even give secret names to malls or other public areas you can see nearby.
Your purse can serve as a shield from a knife attack, just donât press it too close to your body. Throw your scarf in the attackerâs face to buy yourself a couple of seconds.

SUMMARY
-Donât leave your thumb out, but donât hide it under your fingers either, otherwise, you could end up breaking it.
-If your hands are being tied together, keep them clenched into fists. If your body is being tied up, take a deep breath in so that your diaphragm expands. The more room thatâs left between you and your ties, the better your chances are of escaping.
-Remember that the most vulnerable spots to strike are the eyes, nose, jaw, throat, neck, solar plexus (or the area right below the ribs), the knees, and shins.
-Apps such as Family Locator, bSafe, and others let you track the movements of your friends and relatives or send out a distress signal if necessary.
-If you donât have a chance to call for help, an encrypted SOS will let your family or friends know youâre in danger. For instance, texting âDonât worry, Iâm alrightâ could stand for âHelp, Iâm in dangerâ.
-Make use of any object that can help.
-Keep pepper spray in your pocket so you can promptly use it and run away.
-If an attacker has grabbed you by the wrist, you can use the ârule of âthumbâ. Rotate your hand towards the attackerâs thumb and yank yourself free.
-Grab the attackerâs wrist with both your hands in order to regain control. Then itâs time to make use of your feet again.
-If the attacker has wrapped his fingers around your throat, kick him in the groin or poke his eyes with your fingers.
-Make it a habit to stand with your back to the buttons panel in an elevator.
-If you have to get in a car with strangers, you can pointedly tell someone on the phone or text the carâs license plate, color, and your destination for the driver to see and hear.
-Learn what you should do if someone is bleeding, having a heart attack, has a fracture, strain, or serious burns here: https://brightside.me/inspiration-health/the-illustrated-essential-guide-to-providing-first-aid-156055/
-Always be on guard. Keep your distance. Keep your palms out in front of you. Run.

Every week in a secret location in Brighton, a group of hunt saboteurs, antifascists, students and other left-wingers spend a few hours teaching each other how to defend themselves at anti-fascist demonstrations or when out sabotaging hunts.
Left Hook is one of the longest running anti-fascist self defense clubs in the UK, taking inspiration from similar initiatives in Germany, Poland, Italy and Greece. Over the past few years other clubs have popped up across the country with similar missions – if youâre going to attend an anti-fascist demonstration, make sure you know how to protect yourself and others if confronted.
Since the Brexit vote in 2016 there has been a dramatic rise in hate crime incidents and far-right terrorism, making the training taking place at Left Hook all the more necessary for those willing to stand against racism.
Practicing a mix of boxing, Muay Thai and MMA techniques, Vice travelled down to Brighton to see the training firsthand and hear from those taking part.
