Self-Defense Basics: Lesson 3 – Stance and Breathing

Welcome to Lesson #3 in your Self-Defense Basics Course! The short version–stand up straight and take a deep breath! The long version? Watch the video! 🙂 â–ºThank you for LIKING AND SHARING this video with someone you love! Make sure you watch all the lessons in this course! Now, for some thoughts from Lesson #3… It may not be a fancy stance or a fighting stance, but you are ALWAYS in a stance. But is how you are sitting or standing RIGHT NOW putting you in a good position to think, move, and defend yourself or not? Here’s the thing… there’s really no point learning how to punch and kick if you haven’t mastered sitting and standing yet. A tense and crooked body means throwing tense and crooked punches! So, before you think about mastering strikes, chokes, and submissions… try mastering your posture. Sit up, stand up, and fill the space you were BORN to fill. Here’s why… if you hold yourself smaller than you really are, you look weak and afraid. That’s exactly who a bad guy is looking for to beat and abuse! Instead, stand tall and keep your eyes up. Don’t be afraid to smile and say hello to people. Those are the signs of confidence and courage… most bad guys don’t want to deal with powerful people! Of course, it’s not always easy to stand tall. When we’re upset, stressed, intimidated, angry, scared, or in pain, our posture shrinks. Our breath changes, too. It might even stop! So, try this–think of your body as a hot air balloon. When it feels like life is folding you up and tying you down, use your breath as the fire to fill yourself back up. Hey– did you know the word “inspire” literally means to breathe in? That’s right–the secret to inspiration… is inspiration! 🙂 I know that standing up straight and taking a deep breath don’t sound like flashy lessons, but I promise you, when it comes to self-defense and living the best life possible, they’re both crucial. I want you to recognize that every time you straighten up or take a deep breath to fill your space, you’re practicing martial arts. Remember this–you are a creature of this earth just like any other. You have a right to be here. So, don’t let anything or anyone shrink you. Train yourself all day, every day to remember how brave and powerful you really are! THANKS FOR WATCHING! P. S. Is it ok to share suggestions/ideas/tips in comments? (with spoiler warning just in case it turns out to hit the subject of your future advice) There's one technique (technically three techniques) that saved my life more than a dozen times, not just in fights, and I think everyone should know them.

Another great principle-driven self-defense lesson. The fanciest architecture is useless without a proper foundation. And an excellent foundation in self-defense will be sufficient for 90% of confrontations any civilian faces.

This is what Miyamoto Musashi meant when he wrote, "Make your fighting stance your common way of standing, and your common way of standing your fighting stance." In this way, you are practicing your martial art all the time and you don't have to "get ready" to defend yourself. It was also a fundamental principle of Bruce Lee in JKD: you do not chamber or cock before attacking, but attack from where you already are.

Great stuff! Advanced martial strategy from the beginning: attitude, awareness, structure, breathing.

I will implement these tips into my life

Jeremy Whitfield says:

Almost got into a fight the other week and I agree, I feel like the guy was picking on me because I came off as weak with my posture, I tried defending my self verbally but my body language didn't show it so the instigator was probably even more confident and thought I was no threat. Not gonna lie I was a bit nervous but still ready to fight
