Does Master Wong’s Self-Defense Work?

Q&A with the coach. Why self defense is garbage.

Mark says:

I have done both mma and krav maga. To keep it simple I would compare it to soccer and krav maga are my set pieces like free kicks and penalties where I practice a static starting situation and if you do the moves correctly you will get away (just like set pieces in soccer). My mma is more my normal game and trying to control your opponent. I have a really good krav maga teacher and he pointed some things out that in mma are good but in krav maga/real life arnt. For example I had my hands/guard to high and he said; you cant see other people comming you are to focussed at one person, also I was to comfortable on the ground, I needed to get up quicker, as quick as possible because for example out of no where someone could come up and kick me in the head. So these 2 can really complete eachother but you have to be aware of it.

we need practical explanation not theory..

Miguel WOLF Rivera says:

Every situation is different, to many individuals don't have the proper training. Set patterns are great to drill muscle and mental memory. However in Real Life nothing nor anyone is going to attack in any set prearranged forms. Only by breaking free of the setting patterns that one is taught does one begin to be able to free flow. Arya Kosariya says:

This might be right…. But I still love Master Wong cause that man is funny as fuck. Like for Master Wong.

gutterfightsecrets says:

I love the way this guy thinks.

Giovannir Moremoney says:

you're absolutely right when it comes to prevent the fight before it even happens you can do that with krav maga aswell but you have to change your mindset however i disagree with you in some point some times thing can go wrong and when that happens you better be prepared for it there is when defense is the only option

sleepymom _ says:

As a woman..my emphasis are in the things i do as a pre -self defence..which is prevention
In how i dress, less or no jewelry, type of shoes that i wear, how i walk and observe my surroundings ..it shows also that i care about my surroundings..sometimes i spot someone who is also watching me..with slight eye contact they look away immediately, when i walk i dont view phones, how i talk to people esp those on the streets that i dont know..id be polite but not showing signs that may be interpreted as weakness, depending on the area.. i choose the best time to be at that place..or ask a fried or my spouse to join me if i feel unsure..this is what i do as a 40 something woman.

truth show says:

I don't think you have understood what self defence means ; it means no rules and multiple opponents. MMA fighters are useless at self defence, with unpredictability, weapons, multiple attackers, no time limit, no rules, no referee etc. Many of Master Wong's videos are the same as Gracie street self defence moves. MMA doesn't deal with clothes, or strangulation etc. too many rules. Self defence is far superior to MMA because you can use a broken bottle etc.

TRUTH SEEKER says:

NR.1 Before a woman can even come close to beat a trained man she have to be stronger than the man she fight NR.2 have sufficient grappling skills experience in like MMA BJJ CATCH WRESTLING all of those together would be a great combination, even with all that it will still be difficult for a woman beat the man becuz men have a huge amount of testosterone and adrenaline which serves to give them extra strength and endurance when he feel threaten or fear for he`s life "I`M TALKING ABUT REAL MEN NOT SOY BOYS"

carnivalwrestler says:

People don't start a fight with you, they just attack you, sometimes alone, usually with some help like another perp or a weapon. It's not your fault for just walking down the street and being white. But that's enough to piss off a lot of people, especially if all you do is mind your own business.

As far as Master Wong is concerned, he's exceptionally fit and explosive, he has great P4P power. But a lot of his entry techniques seem very difficult to pull off, getting to the outside by just parrying a cross to the inside, especially with the far hand. Slip a left jab, weave under a right hook and deliver a shovel punch to the liver, yes, doable if you're a trained boxer. with years of sparring/competing with very good opponents. But trying to deflect a right hook or cross by parrying it to the inside with your right hand, while standing nearly straight up as you move, and then end up with your assailant bent forward and exposing his entire side. Nah.

Also, he misses a lot of beautiful targets and goes for some light slaps on a not so vulnerable part of the assailant's body, rather than giving him an elbow or fist in the kidney or liver or plexus, etc.

Still, I find gold in every art, and I can apply some of his stuff. And like I say, he's explosive. And he's funny, too. Guess that's why I subscribed to him : )

That's a good point… Good video!

Adam Satterfield says:

Master Ken has the only real self defense system on youtube.

Judah Telesford says:

The key to self defense is in prepping students for possible ways to react in the event of an attack. Over time, it becomes second nature. What Wong teaches is efficient for women, and children to react quickly and get out of there, instead of being a helpless/clueless victim.

I was bully in school and i learn running away is good but then tomorrow it wont work twice ur right u had to fight back that is true i like that honestly man im going to give a like

Robert the Doll says:

Self defense has to be practiced continuously and you have to practice practical movements and they would need to exercise regularly to strengthen and keep the body strong enough to be ready for a bad situation showing fat lazy people fancy moves can get them killed in a bad situation

Gavin VON MEYER says:

You can't say Self Defense is bullshit. There is merit in everything, and Master Wong's videos are very practical. And most self defense videos tell you that to avoid is best option, but sometimes you can't avoid. And I personally avoided being robbed a few times, and that was simply because those thugs saw on my expression that I looked confident to take them on and not allow them to rob me in broad daylight, with lots of people around.

Vinny D says:

Finally an honest practical and intelliget "self-defense" video/advice

Riccardo Meloni says:

Ramsey, although I agree with you on many points, I disagree with you here. In my opinion, there is a huge difference between a professional fight (rules, time to prepare, referee) and what self-defense – if taught well and realistically – deals with: assault. Although a good self-defense school also teaches situational awareness and scanning possible threats (pre-fight indicators), it is impossible to be prepared for violence all the time. I do not know if Master Wong's techniques work in reality, but your comparison is flawed when you stack up a fight in a ring (or agreed upon street fight) and predatory assault. I might be wrong though, considering my Krav Maga background πŸ˜‰

Periklis Iordanidis says:

Never needed to hit somebody, or run in 20+ situations on streets. Art of fighting without fighting.

Genadij Smradztoiek says:

I can assure you that the self self defense wok works just fine. It is heavy and cumbersome to carry, though πŸ™

Tino Gisondi says:

Real Question? How bad is Mr. Wong? How high is Mr. Wong? How low will Mr. Wong stoop? How dangerous or depraved can Mr. Wong become? Those kinds of questions…

Tino Gisondi says:

Master Wong's self-defense? The one that's based off heavy cocaine usage? Mr. Wong at face value is with Chinese mafia. At the very least, he's a real life bad guy or boss from Streets of Rage or Double Dragon. At the worst and he loses all his shit? There's no telling how bad Mr. Wong can get. If they *Fuck* Mr. Wong and he turns? Mr. Tony Montana-Wong…

The Lion of The West says:

Personally I am sick of Master Wongs boxer videos with the gloves on

Henrique Nakamura says:

Self-Defense is like Jazz. You can learn "self-defense moves" the same way you can learn "jazz scales". But if your technique, feeling, and conceptual understanding of what's going on doesn't hold up to the situation, you're gonna get overwhelmed by the other players.

FightClubStellingen says:

Self defence is stuff like setting and communicating boundaries and knowing what to do when someone doesn't respect them. Or it's noticing that your gut tells you there's something wrong, get some more infos and choosing the most cost effective option witch leads to safety. That's what I think self defence is. Then there is fighting and there is martial arts. 3 different things with overlapping parts.

joel husbands says:

love master Wong and don't think his material is totally useless however don't think self defense videos are the magic pills that many imagine them to be. learning these patterns can be cool to do but imo not very different from putting on a gi to do exercise, forms and two man sequences. With time these things may help improve reflexes and give some conditioning but no way do they really prepare you for the kind of violence and brutality that causes some of the toughest police officers to skip dinner upon returning from the crime scene. These lessons are patterns and patterns can be great when teaching beginners to move, imo especially children. Going into a confrontation with the idea that a pattern will protect you from the chaos to ensue is a recipe for a rude awakening. Can a woman save her life by gwabbing her assailant in the nut? maybe. Is it guaranteed to work all the time? hell no
