I will agree the Federal Hydroshock and the Speer are known for very good expansion from medium velocity loads however 45acp ammo currently offers some hotter loads and I'm a firm believer of using the hottest loads that I can control enough to shoot well. Magtech offers a 185gr JHP +P Gold at 1140fps with 540ft.lbs. Or a 230JHP+P gold 1000fps with 500ft.lbs of energy. My favorite is DoubleTap 185JHP +P 1200FPS and a whopping 600ft.lbs. Energy how's that for some hot ones. There are yet a couple more but these are the two that I love for my Defense loads in My Glock 30s. The double recoil springs does an amazing job of taming the recoil of the hotter loads especially for me that being the Double Tap 185gr at 1200fps it's a real screamer and definetley not for the meek of heart but it is actually controllable in my G30s.myou really gotta try some of these loads if you like some real power from a 45ACP.
All great rounds indeed but when I carry my Kimber Eclipse Target II I prefer Hornady Critical Duty in +P. It is a 220 gr going at 998 ft/sec. It does not expand a lot (just enough), allowing it to penetrate deep (about 16- 17 inches in ballistic gel). Ah, and it is barrier blind. That is a plus. Remington Golden Saber 230 gr. I no longer have a 1911, but use a Glock 21 for Home Defense. I've loaded Golden Saber since 1996 regardless of which .45 ACP platform I've used.
Quite surprised nobody ever talks about the Winchester Win1911. 230 grain, designed entirely to be fed and fired from a 1911 (hence the name). I pick up a box every time i come across it.
Federal HST .45acp +p for me. 950-975fps out of a full size 5" 1911. And since even the hottest .45 loads are low pressure compared to 9 and 40 the recoil difference between standard pressure .45 and +p isn't even noticeable.

I use my good ol 40mm cannon as my CCW. I make sure they are hollow point though. Don't want that round killing more than necessary.
