Pepper gel is a lot more effective. It lessens the chance of blowing back on you. Technically at work I’m not supposed to carry anything classified as a weapon.
Chuck Haggard has established himself as an authority on pepper spray for self-defense. He does not recommend the gel because it takes longer to take effect.
I have an Amazon subscription for gel stream pepper spray that I have given to all female kinfolk and to any friends/female acquaintances as I have extras in hand. My sister, finding one in Mom’s dresser, stupidly triggered it. My brother and I were rolling on the floor but she was not of the same mind as we were!!! 😵💫😂😉
Yea well, one night my abusive husband was getting ready to attack me once again, I emptied out that whole container of pepper spray out on his a**, he was running, screaming and crying all around the house👍😂😂. The Police arrived and took me to jail😢😢😡.. I guess the police liked it better when I called them with black eyes and bruises. They call Wisconsin a woman's state yea right. That's why his rotten butt is now my ex-husband👍.
Pepper spray is a very low level of force, too. It's even lower than punching someone. You punch someone, you can split their lip, knock their tooth out, etc…if you spray someone, they're perfectly fine in an hour or so. Very low level of force. I recommend EVERYONE carry some. It's super cheap and can be a low risk option legally speaking.
I always carry OC and surely would have it when carrying a firearm for a less than lethal option. I buy new every two years and spray the old and have had blowback on me and that was nasty. I use the stream to minimize contamination.

I totally agree. If it's just a hard word the pepper spray is a good idea then, but if it's a real threat we should draw our firearms.
Plenty of exp with spray here. If somebody has decided he is going to 'kill' you, the spray will only blind him and hamper his efforts.
He can still punch, stab or club you in your head for sure.
Ie. 2 thugs were fighting PJ MMA and I hosed both down. Me and my friend were coughing but they were still fighting.

I carry stream. Gel typically takes longer to work on the perp, so beware!
