John, You seemed to imply that the good guy didn't know how to fight. I think this guy was up to the challenge. The lack of mace and hands in his pockets aside, he had clearly decided in advance that he would use force, if necessary, to get the thief out of the store. I think he covered his ASP.

I think the most I would do is take a picture of him and call the police. It’s not his job to put his life in danger for the stores merchandise. People are killed for less then a dollar. Not worth it.
Sounds like the police are not good at finding thieves or perps…… isn't that part of their job description, or are they just paid to be sound boards ? All this technology out here and we are still being robbed, mugged, battered and killed… just gets old hearing "they still haven't found these guys"
I personally think the worker did too much.. i get that he stole before and dont got no business in the store.. the clerk had a right to ask him to leave.. but the dude didnt do anything or steal anything he just walked around and nothing is stolen til its out the store.. he just picked up a pair of glasses and got attacked for it.. the clerk went to hard for his hourly job.. definitely more determined than me

You want to go physical, then go physical, get him down, choke him out, then call the police. Then they can at least arrest the guy. You throw him out, now he's loose.
