This is a perfect example of why social services being sent to these type of calls is not a good idea. I absolutely agree the 1st officer was not coming in with the right tone. I also agree that usjng Spanish to connect was a good idea

family only calls police ,when all family members are sick and tired of dealing with them,because the family refuses to do anything with their ill family member
I feel so sad that this person who had mental health problems had to die but the cops had just 1 second to determine wither this man was going to kill them or not , if they make a mistake , one of them cops is going to get killed , The cops did what they had to do , and if you think you can do better than them , then join the police force
I respect that the family is in pain, but suing the police is unfair and disrespectful. The family clearly feels like the 40 years leading up to this momment has nothing to do with them. What if someone was attacking them with a pipe, should the cops try to diffuse the situation with bean bags while their skulls are being caved in?
Let me get this straight. The family was scared for their safety so they called the police knowing that their loved one was uncontrollable and when the police did their job and sadly their loved one died they decide to try and get money out the situation? If they didn't want this to happen they should have delt with him their damned selves.
Look…the cops not a 'murderer' or anything like that. He's most likely following department policy and cant be expected to on the spot suddenly invent new rules of engagement. BUT wider law enforcement leadership DOES have to find a better way to keep officers safe while non lethally stopping people who are not in control of their mental faculties. Just sort of throwing up our hands and saying 'oh well nothing to be done other than putting lead through vital organs' seems like such a dopey capitulation. Tasers are trash, so we obviously need some new invention. A device that deploys a net from long range maybe.

Please deal with you loved ones. Don't call the cops on a loved one that in in mental distress. They are not equipped to deal with this situation.
