This video is a quick Reality Check to the self defense myth that placing your car keys in between your fingers is a good idea for self defense. I disagree with this idea and provide a couple of better self defense alternatives.

I don't recommend everyone carry a firearm. A firearm requires a lot of training and if not used correctly could harm others around you. A firearm is something to take very seriously. If you plan to use one, then you need to be willing to train…. train…..train. As well as spend money and time at the range. Many people who have firearms hardly do any training and often times are unfamiliar with the weapon.
I think only those dedicated to the obligation of carrying a firearm to carry one and that isn't very many people.
You're right …key fist is stupid and a false sense of security… but the idea that you can use a weapon with absolutely no training is just as dumb… a carabiner …get real… learn how to fight and dont trust gimicks…
There are a couple of things you kinda got wrong about this. One or two keys, and the technique taught is usually a downward raking motion with the flat of the key not the edge. It's taught for a few reasons- everyone has them, it works with a natrural body movements,it requires very little force, and it visibly marks the attacker. It's not meant as a fight ender( a lot of people have trouble jumping right to what they see as higher levels of force ), but an immediate deterrent and distraction . Take a single key between either your thumb and index second knuckle( MIP) or index and middle second knuckle and just moderately brush it across a cardboard box- now think about half a dozen time across someone's face at full force and you get the point.
Very Good advice. I always think it's crazy to think to use your most effective escape tool as a weapon. You can lock yourself inside your vehicle, drive away, block in or out a group of people, there a bunch of ways to use your vehicle as a "shield". Dropping or Breaking your keys would be horrible. Also, it really hurts having those thin keys being pressed into the palm of your hand. There are much better options, even a tactical pen is a much better option than keys.
If the grid goes down long term or perm like in the shit has hit the fan then we dont need to worry about the corrupt laws and can use a knife, machete, firearm ect.At this point its looking more and more likely we will either end up in another great depression, civil war or shit hits the fan perm. kinda situation.
Hi! Would you consider doing a video on what to do in an active shooter situation? Just today I heard of shootings in a Wal-Mart, a mall and a nightclub. Your advice would be very valuable ,especially if you can't can't carry a gun. Thanks!
It's a wonderful idea to piss someone off and hurts your hand. Unless it's a tool/weapon is made for that express purpose it's less than useless. The reason your keys should be in your hand is to press your panic button on your key fob.
EXACTLY, JJ!! My sister developed a method and taught Self Defense for women at Sacramento State University and the 'keys-as-a-weapon' myth is one of the first ones she debunked. She no longer teaches, but many of her students carry on her teachings providing valuable knowledge and abilities to women, thus enabling them to protect themselves from attack. 😀
I used to teach Martial Arts when I was younger. I gave it up a few decades ago though. Life and all. You are right. Keys are stupid. Something that is legal in I believe every state is a Kubotan. For a untrained person the movement required to be effective with a Kubotan comes natural. Be sure to get one with a dull point on it. Even then though it is highly unlikely a women can fight off the average male. Sadly. So yes please, get a pistol. Get some Training, Carry it. My wife is 120lb 5'9" tall lady and i do mean SKINNY yet she can conceal a g19 just fine.
I recommend 'Meditations on Violence: A Comparison of Martial Arts Training & Real World Violence ' by Rory Miller. He has been a Prison Riot Response team (C.E.R.T.) trainer, prison guard, and beat cop, among many other relevant job titles, and the book is an eye-opening look at what American violent crime often actually looks like. I have gifted and re-purchased it multiple times
A couple takeaways: violence happens from a position of opportunity for the predator: fast and hard, from the darkness. Often, we have to react brutally and before we even know what hit us. We benefit from looking like a difficult target (alert, poised) and from training from a disadvantage (surprised, physically pinned)
Spot on. We need to always examine our assumptions, and ask ourselves- would I let that stop me, if i was a desperate rapist or thief, maybe taking pain-blocking and performance-enhancing drugs?
Your recommendations are good for those who can not have access to a gun. The most important guidance is that whatever is to be used must ALREADY be in the hand. That means that the tool must be ready anytime a person enters transitional spaces.
Having considerable experience in martial arts (muay thai kick boxing and Brazilian jiu jitsu) most "self defense" techniques you see on YouTube videos are useless bullshit. You are NOT going to deter or defend against a SKILLED determined attacker with a car key or an "eye poke". Get in shape and take up a grappling art (Judo or Brazilian jiu jitsu) and a striking ard (Muay Thai, or kick boxing). Train consistently for a year and you will have enough competency to deal with most situations. The carabiner and flashlight are useless if you don't know how to throw a good jab, keep your guard up and move (slip punches).
we can't carry guns or any chemical spray or any weapon for self defense in Canada or use anything in self defense, it's a joke…..we can carry knives, but not for protection
hands are way to valuable to risk a closed fist strike in a fight………..one step closer and your elbow will do way more damage. Otherwise hammer, palm, or classic karate chop is the move.
I like the flashlight idea, personally. Not only can you strike him with the "pokey bits" (love the scientific terminology, btw) or use it as a fist load, but those bright LED lights can be mighty blinding/disorienting in a dark scenario.
I like the idea of a duct tape-wrapped carabiner, but you are quite right, sir: there's no substitute for Big Iron.: )
I've always thought this was silly. A trigger between the thumb and index finger not so much.

Unless you attached them to one of these chained key chains that's like 1.5 feet, then you could swing it with enough force to hurt/cut/lacerate.

The battlements on the flashlight are to see if it is still on when you set them up at the table
Totally agree. Freddy Kruger fingers maybe, but not keys.

We live in communist liberal run Canada,so i guess a carbine is legal….You brothers in the U.S.are lucky to have the 2nd amendment!
Oh sure – blame Tanner …….

I know that I fall victim to wishful thinking.
Dude not 4 keys, 1 right out the middle that's all you have that's all our ladies need if they don't feel comfortable carrying weapon
Simple physics: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Oh yeah. Those keys would hurt me more. Oh dang I like that shirt.

Anything in your hands becomes a weapon and if you have to fight fight to win as your life will depend on the outcome.
