I like the Mendes bros but to say a cross collar choke couldn’t be
effective in a self defense situation is ridiculous.

fahadkelantan says:

It’s called cognitive dissonance. Of course they won’t say sport BJJ is
garbage. Their only credentials are sport BJJ. If you wanna dance go do
ballet. JuJutsu is a Martial Art for combat.

BJJ is going down the same road Judo did. Rolling or Randori becomes a
sport, while the rest of curriculum which includes strikes and weapons gets
taken out or naturally phased out. Points get introduced, and less and less
people go for the finish, the Ippon.

Jigoro Kano foresaw this and warned about it. Yet here we are. Judo has
gone to shit. And now BJJ is half way there. Kano would be ashamed as would
the Gracie brothers. For those grapplers out there, stick to reality, it
never goes out of fashion.

Daniel Rodriguez says:

I don’t buy it. I believe self-defense and sport jiu jitsu fall under the
umbrella of jiu jitsu, but there is clearly 2 different mindsets. If you’re
teaching your white belts inverted, bermibolo, and all these other point
score techniques, the students will have muscle memory to resort to those
techniques in serious situations. I’ve taught advance classes and showed
blocking punches from the guard, standing arm locks, neck cranks, because
they can be effective in the street fight, but when I do students look at
me like I’m teaching something they’ve never seen before. Self defense
should be the base, then show the fancy stuff from there, but when i see 2
white belt, tap hands to roll, then both sit on their asses, scoot on their
butts closer, both fighting for leg lasso for 6 minutes, neither one trying
to get on top, and then have the shake hands and tell each other “good
match”. WHAT????? I rolled with a purple belt, allowing open hand slapping,
he looked at me confused and lost. It was just sad.

Hey budo jake your a cool dude and i totally respect your mission but i
think you shoukd stick to making the money and staying behind the scenes
because your personality is very weak your interviews suck get someone who
is more likeable and budo videos will go to the next level you need a
spokesman

Grant Collins says:

The people who claim that there’s a difference between sport jujitsu and
self-defense know nothing about Jiu Jitsu. They are trying to dethrone
those who have established themselves as experts in the field of
competition by establishing themselves in the field of self-defense Jiu
Jitsu which can’t be measured and has to live in the world of theory.
Bottom line is jujitsu training within the confines of the IB JJF rules
still teaches a mastery of movement, and you’re mastering the movement of
controling, joint locking, and strangling other humans. As an example,
shooting is a sport in the Olympics and I guarantee you a gold medalist
shooter from the Olympics is well prepared to defend himself with a gun.

negao azul says:

This is why sportsmen should keep at what they’re good at and shut their
mouth. They’re good at sport bjj, without any sarcasm: This is a great
achievement. Now you feel safe in a “real life self defense situation” with
your sport bjj… What a load of crap Even tennis men are safer than them
in a “real life self defense situation”. If with their sport credential
they can’t at least compete in high level mma, their bjj is shit, no matter
what. If they do, they’ll show that they haven’t totally forgotten their
roots.

Alan Herrera says:

Lets stay in focus here. For starters, I enjoy everything Budo Videos
represents.

Now, the episode that BudoVideo hosted Rickson Gracie should have opened
the eyes/ears for many jiu-jitsu enthusiast/practitioners on many levels.

Being a father of a 4month old, i would never sign my son up to a sport
jiu-jitsu curriculum, strictly. The school MUST be geared towards self
defense.

We really need to pay attention to what the Machado brothers, Rickson
Gracie and certain members of his family are saying, and MOST importantly-
we need to listen to what Helio Gracie has stated in past documentaries!

I respect the message that JiuJitsu practitioners are getting across: be
humble, show respect, be professional. All that is true, but to “sweep”
self defense BJJ under the rug like no-biggy is alarming.

rck198 says:

Much respect for this guys, but clearly they don’t have a concept of what
is brought in self defense jiu jitsu, its not about being tough like they
see people might take it, its about being able to survive a scenario.
Integrity is a part of the martial art among other virtues, and instructors
must teach not only technique but philosophy as well.

Mr.Fats says:

hmmm…cross collar choke wouldn’t work if someone was wearing a sweater or
jacket? Anyways, the Mendes bros are legit in my book….that’s why I’m a
subscriber to their techniques.

We stay, sweat it out, and earn those belts for love of jiu-jitsu’s sport
aspect. LOVE of the sport.

If all anybody wanted is to learn self-defense, grab a partner and a copy
of Gracie Combatives and you are well on your way to learning how to
effectively defend yourself against a larger opponent in a real street
fight. The Gracies already put it out there so that all of us can have
these 36 essential techniques (in detailed instructions) to defend
ourselves. That’s more technique than one would ever use in a real street
fight. Simply put, it’s distance management, escapes, and submission.

After that, you’re self-defense course is done. Why would anybody want to
spend 10 more years training if their only goal was self-defense.
Seriously?!

Self-defense aspect works from a premise that the attacker does not know
jiu-jitsu. If he does not know how to react, of course you’ll get that
armbar or rear naked choke. Sport jiu-jitsu sharpens those skills so that
you can apply one form of attack or another to a knowledgeable, defending
opponent.

To discredit Sport BJJ guy and say that “he can’t do shit to an equally
trained traditional BJJ guy in real combat” is talking nonsense.
Traditional BJJ guy couldn’t even begin to imagine the amount of training
and drilling that Sport BJJ guy puts in to prepare for a competition. If
all things being equal, the one who puts in the hard work and dedication
wins.

mario juana says:

Wait, so are you telling me to go for berimbolo if I have a gun pointed at
me lol✌️
