South African here, just wanted to confirm that yes it is pretty difficult to get a firearms license especially under section 13 (self defence).
Additionally I would like to say that there is no such thing as a concealed carry permit or license. By law you can carry any firearm licensed under any section (13, 14, 15, 16 which are Self Decence, Collectors, Dedicated Sport Shooting and Dedicated Hunters statuses), however you have to conceal it, it is illegal to have a vidible firearm in South Africa unless you are law enforcement, private security or military (these firearms are licensed under different sections).
Its not as difficult as you would think but its just the training, tests and paperwork that takes a lot of time.
For interesrs sake, to get a firearm you need to first get a proficiency certificate (there are ones for all types of firearms, pistol, shotgun, semi auto rifles et cetera, which you have to do seperately) from a police accredited firearms training academy.
Where you have to write and pass tests relating to firearm laws and self defence laws followed by a practical test where you have to shoot a small target from 10 yards away hitting 10 shots within a specific grouping.
Once you pass and get your proficiency certificate you then apply for a competency license from the police once that is approved you can apply for a firearms license.
The hardest part is the motivation and paperwork for the competency license and firearms license.
All in all it took me 2 and a half years to get all my firearms licenses.
Its the waiting for the approval of paperwork that made it take so long.
And now as a legal firearm owner I carry everyday and go for training once a month.
I don’t really enjoy so called scary movies all deaths are fairly cringe, falls over/ trips and dies…. That would have been have been his fault for dying. Learn how to drive my granny would have done work in a geo metro. There are no excuses here!!!😂
