As to the question, absolutely I would dispatch a dog if it posed a threat to me or my family, be it with a stick, knife, gun, rock, whatever. If we’ve got to go, we’re going all-in.
I would absolutely kill a dog if I had to. Only reason I haven't is the one time a person was torn up by dogs at the end of my driveway there were a dozen people standing around so no safe backdrop.
Ha! I thought I was the only one who said People's Republic of NJ. I was born and raised in NJ, and it will always be home, but I will never go back. I live in FL now, and I always carry a firearm, pepper spray (POM, thanks to your recommendation), and a knife (but that's just a tool). I love animals, and since people know I like firearms, they think I like to hunt. Not true. However, I will eat animals all day long, and if a dog is chewing on my arm, I'm not going to pet it and say, "nice puppy." It will be dead puppy.
In the people's republic of NJ the owner of said dogs would be held liable for any injury their dogs caused while at large. Actually this is true in most localities. I would not hesitate to shoot a dog to protect my young children but I'd have to be sure they meant to attack me if I were alone to shoot one, not just because they are menacing.
I have shot a dog, I did not like it, I still don't like today, but the I asked the owner to deal with them 2 times before they came at me going to work one day.

If I had to take care of vulnerable and couldn't get a firearm, I'd fashion a spear: flatten the end of a pipe then work on that.

Any dog/ dogs that will attack unprovoked should be put down.
