My name is Rokas. I’m a Lithuanian guy who trained Aikido for 14 years, 7 of them running a professional Aikido Dojo until eventually I realized that Aikido does not live up to what it promises. Lead by this realization I decided to make a daring step to close my Aikido Dojo and move to Portland, Oregon for six months to start training MMA at the famous Straight Blast Gym Headquarters under head coach Matt Thornton. After six months intensive training I had my first amateur MMA fight after which I moved back to Lithuania. During all of this time I am documenting my experience through my YouTube channel called “Martial Arts Journey”. Now I am slowly setting up plans to continue training MMA under quality guidance and getting ready for my next MMA fight as I further document and share my journey and discoveries. — If you want to support my journey, you can make a donation to my PayPal at [email protected] SUBSCRIBE to see when the next videos will come out: ► http://bit.ly/1KPZpv0 Check the video “Aikido vs MMA” which started this whole Martial Arts Journey: ► https://youtu.be/0KUXTC8g_pk If you want to support me and this channel on a regular basis check my Patreon page: ► https://www.patreon.com/rokasleo

Martial Arts Journey says:

Life keeps turning in amazing and surprising ways. About two years ago as I started intensively questioning Aikido I was suggested to listen to a podcast by Iain Abernethy where he talks about the "Martial Map" on how martial arts, consensual fighting and self defense interrelate, yet they are also very different fields. The impact of this podcast to me was huge and it greatly helped me shape my understanding on what these three realms are and how to communicate well about it in commonly happening misunderstandings.

A week ago I was filming an incredible event called "The Karate Nerd Experience" organized by Jesse Enkamp in Stockholm, where Iain was one of the instructors. At first I did not realize that it is him, until after two minutes into his presentation. Not only that, but it turns out Iain also follows my YouTube channel and knows my story quite well!! After we had a laugh about it, we decided to make sure we record a talk together. Here is one more amazing conversation which life just made it happen!

I like this guy. Most people don't realise self defense is NOT about "winning", but "NOT losing". You get out of dangerous situation unharmed (or the least damage possible), that's self defense.

Dennis12869 says:

The best activity for self-defense: Live Action Roleplay. That is the place where you learn what to do when you are ambushed, how to run away, what to do if you have to fight multiple opponents and the best part you learn how to ambush someone else, so you get an understanding of how these people think.

Yajindojo says:

Once again you hook up with another guy I’m following here. 👍👍

Average Joe says:

Bruce Lee said it best. “Boards don’t hit back”.

Planet Nube 2 says:

We are all too caught up in BS and along the way we miss the point.

Ruben Moniz says:

Ged says:

Great interview!

Skylar Fisher says:

Where boxers have the 'knock out' they win easily too.
What really matters more than the style or type of self defense training is the heart and mind.
Fighting is in some people's blood DEEP. Just born with it like a prodigy. And people train all their life and still suck

Skylar Fisher says:

Where they 'fight' they win.
When they can fight, fighting gets very easy.

themasterofegal says:

Wow awesome interview! Thank you so much, I learned a lot, already a big fan of iain und now of you too

Ferg Crichton says:

The need to apply the appropriate skills to specific circumstances is essential and a long learning process in itself.

Thanks for another great interview Rokas.

Thomas Kolter says:

Okay scenario: I'm the bad guy and want to rob you and am using force, I spray Bear Repellent the closest thing to mace a citizen can carry legally and have a knife and its say a good sized one since being a criminal screw the law, you can't see and are going to get stabbed at least once … how does your martial art handle that? Go. Mine does its how my disabled self defense heavy style  will defend that in the face from my power wheelchair then a taser and chair ramming offense then a knife ,under four inches, until the bad person cannot pose a threat to me not fancy but it works. But say the role was reversed and you were the victim I want to know your blinded, can't breath well and have an opponent armed willing to stab you how does your martial art handle the dirty street fighter. If it doesn't well its not a good self-defense like do you see the can in time to guard your eyes and dive at the user in a way to make it not effective, do you have a taser or a knife to use handy etc.

Ritergart says:

Bunkai millions 😂

Jake O'Leary says:

Just a question – is applied karate just more useful for "self defense"? I dunno if I would take just a Karatekas word on it. Maybe get someone with a more diverse background?
