Israeli Special Forces Self Defense Technique | Tactical Rifleman

Working on a fast draw and presentation from the holster is a very important skill to build and maintain but it’s crucial to have some supplemental open-hand skills to enable you to get to your weapon. When that guy is coming at you with a knife and you’re already at a close range you have to take care of the immediate threat first. These are two of our favorite defenses to two of the most common knife attacks. This can be done safely on the range, but we suggest you break down the training and get comfortable with just the open-hand portion before taking it to the range. As far as target placement… Incorporating skills like these into your training should be done incrementally. We start with the shooter facing the targets and the attacker/instructor is facing the shooter and has his back to the targets. This keeps the shooter oriented within muzzle boundaries at all times. For range safety the target is behind the instructor. If you want to work on turning after disengaging from the bad guy you can start the drill facing in other directions. As you progress with this skill set you can add multiple targets, malfunctions and other skills to the drill. I suggest you review you Martial Blade Concepts in regards to the Split X. I remember Janich specifically saying that bending the arm is a weak platform for deflecting knife blows, and to extend your arms in a straight fashion, which is the reason to extend your fingers (instead of making a fist).

What if he is doing quick attacks not really committed to any single attack/angle? Like you 3 step his feint and his real attack comes in soon after. Mixing knife attacks in with striking and grappling!

It’s maybe the most basic Filipino/Malaysian technique. It works against boxing too as it’s just a form of partying, really. I use and teach Filipino techniques with the pro and amateur boxers and mma fighters I train. I’ve been doing martial arts for over 30 years, boxing for well over 20 years, Muay Thai for almost 21 years now, multiple systems of Filipino Kali and Indonesian Silat for almost 29 years, and MMA since 2002/2003. I did Japanese Jiujitsu in the 80’s, freestyle wrestling in the 90’s, and trained under a former Olympic team Greco-Roman coach in the early 2000’s. I am a Kru and a Guru and a Sifu in JKD, too, along with a coach and I’ve trained police and soldiers alike. I have trained guys who’ve used this stuff to survive and Filipino Kali and JKD has been taught to special operations of every branch for decades. Paul Vunak was training SEALs back in the 80’s, I believe. Point being if it didn’t work, they wouldn’t use it. Everything works within proper context. This isn’t a sparring drill, it’s basically just a reference point drill, that highlights some applicable techniques within specific contexts. It’s a very tiny part of a larger whole. And yes, these techniques work against, and compliment western boxing. Hubud-Lubud and other basic Kali sunsets are also called Filipino Boxing and comprise an empty hand system very similar to traditional boxing, but which includes elbows, knees, head butts, clinch fighting and biting (which is basically all just “dirty boxing”). I also believe they’re transitioning from the floored opponent (it’s not sparring so that opponent doesn’t actually represent a threat), to the draw and shooting elsewhere because it conditions rapid transitioning from empty hand vs blade or blade on blade assault mitigation, to immediately transition to controlling breathing and adrenal stress response, to target acquisition threat elimination, under stress load. So if there were multiply threats in your home, during a home invasion and you did actually incapacitate the initial threat that assaulted you, you’re not stopping but immediately acquiring a proper tool (weapon) and going into tracker mode within your own home to find the threats to your family, without stopping. You don’t have time to stop to make sure that threat you stopped is dead, your eyes are immediately tracking both bad guys and family members and identifying each then eliminating the threats before doubling back to make sure they’re put down for good. And if you talk to enough special operations guys who’ve had to clear a target site in the Middle East, and have gotten bad intel and it’s a family home that still may also have terror threats living in it, and all hell breaks loose once you knock the door down, and one minute you’re hand to hand fighting a bad guy with a blade or crop harvesting hook, then you have kids and women in their night clothes running at you and your own your own cuz your small team didn’t anticipate that shit show so every man has to clear a sector on their own, and your rules of engagement don’t allow you to indiscriminately shoot/kill women and children even though they too may be a very real threat, then you’d understand the practical applicability of the various moving parts of this drill. It’s not a comprehensive drill that’s meant to answer any or every question you may face in the field, in its entirety. It’s a tiny part of a larger whole, which is why training with a real and qualified instructor is necessary. Also, Craig Douglas of shiv works (who has a Kali background too), teaches current and former MMA fighters knife defense. It is wrestling heavy, but there’s still elements of this in there. I teach a wrestling heavy system too, but there’s a shit ton various S.E. Asian concepts and techniques in there too. If MMA fighters had to deal with blades tools or guns, they’d use different techniques too. MMA is fantastic, but it’s also a sport, with rules, a singular opponent, no weapons, no illegal techniques, a ref coming to the rescue, weight classes, time limits, safety equipment, a controlled environment, etc. It’s not reality, no matter the marketing hype. It will get your ready for a one on one fight better than maybe anything else out there, but it won’t get you ready for combat. The Israelis are involved in regular combat as much or more than any other nation. They are constantly incorporating these kinds of techniques into their system and the foundations for their various systems, which they still teach their solider, who still use them to this day, are traditional martial arts. They’ve added and subtracted as needed but the foundations are very much intact. There’s a reason for that. Within the proper context, and with proper training, this stuff works quite well, under stress, and under battlefield conditions.

At 7:50 and most of the video, he is simply going to break his wrist and slice your wrist. Your arm bars dont control his wrist and the "yoga" technique at 750 was bad. Getting cut is inevitable, but a simple case of bad luck from your wrenching his arm can get your wrist and artery knicked. You may win but you'll be dead in 5.
