Is Wing Chun Effective in a Street Fight for Self Defense

Ask Shane a Question on Twitter▻http://full.sc/1mCEOuk This video is not meant to bash the art of Wing Chun or upset anyone! I have the utmost respect for the art, and there is definitely…

DeagleBeagle says:

They call it MMA for a reason, it has a good mix of all the martial arts to
combat almost any situation. And if it is difficult to learn it means it
isn’t very practical if you can only use it in very specific situations.
MMA can be used in any situation very well. Seems like MMA + BJJ are the
most important things to learn in a fight, depends on how many people are
fighting you. BJJ and other types of wrestling martial arts are great 1 vs
1 but vs multiple people it doesn’t work as well as knowing MMA.

Privilege says:

it’s not going to be effective if it’s the only fighting style you know,
but if you allready have experience with kick boxing, krav maga or boxing,
then some of the techniques in wing chun are really cool and effective to
learn

PeopleofBazaler says:

i agree with you shane i do believe it is good for a hobby but when it
comes to self defence it doesn’t really cut it. and i have got a question
for you what do u prefer Muay Thai or Boxing?

jdziedzic11 says:

Then what would you say is the most realistic and effective martial art to
study for self defense?

Freddy SELONKE says:

dreadlocks, nice

Jameel Hussein says:

Well said may Thai better in a street fight unless you mastered wing Chun
and have knowledge and prowess in other arts

Therealhatepotion says:

I heard a wing chun guy say it works best against other wing chun guys. A
mix of training is the best in a fight. Good punching, kicking and a ground
game is ideal in real life fights. A little dirty boxing skills goes a long
way to winning a street fight. Since the winner writes history so who cares
how you get there.

Luis Quinones says:

As a Wing chun guy, i do agree with shane 100%
i believe wing chun is a good supplementary art, meaning it makes arts liek
muay thai, boxing, sanshou etc better

wing chun is essentially stand up ground and pound, thus its good to use in
clinch or when looking to get a submission

Antony Yam says:

You haven’t seen real wing chun.

xnow thelastmc says:

Hey Shane I agree. You should check out Coach Lyte Burly of “52Blocks” He
shows Wing Chun is basically a specialization of Boxing and how the
techniques are used and works best in clinch or “Trapping” range. I think
it’s just how like BJJ is a specialization of Judo, ground fighting without
takedowns. Wing Chun is just “In-fighting” without “Out-Fighting” it’s
incomplete Boxing.

iabarab55555 says:

Ever hear of the twisting of the elbow generating more power? Is everyone
who said and teaches that wrong? I’m not trying to be sarcastic just to let
you know.

BlueLogic32 says:

If you don’t like wing chun try teakwando, it is the best martial art,
anyone who plays Howarang in tekken can tell you that :p

Alex Ngo says:

Whay do you think about karate

ARThomas17 says:

What about capoeira? Is it ok in a street fight?

777dizi says:

Is bjj good?

Deadpool says:

Krav maga is probably the best option for street fighting since its soul
purpose is to train you for those situations.

Soldier-2Point0 says:

I unsubscribed because of your girly hair.

Led Zep says:

Hey dude, I’m doing Muay Thai at the moment and it’s great. My question is,
should I also do taekwondo for more variety in my kicks, or just continue
to do Muay Thai?

Mepsi Pax says:

I say it every time. It’s not the martial art but the martial artist.

SketchPaint says:

What about Gung Fu

Taekwondo Itf says:

Quick tip leg kicks? Talk about how it’s important to use it.

Heidan Hart says:

Well , actually on the Street , i mean reall street the palce whith guns
and knives , only a few figthing sistems are usefull , like KAPPAP , Krav
Maga , Sambo o Krav Magen , i ve done Muya Thai but agaist a Knive or a Gun
inly whith Muay Thai or Wing Chun im defenseless even Judo and Ju- Jitsu
are not completly safetly , because theres like 10 thugs and only you ,
even throws are dangerous because you are by your self and a wrong step and
its game over

Sycothic El Tigre says:

I would disagree because bruce lee has used and donnie yen yes for straight
up defense wing chun is not safe but its been used in many street fights in
china but also if u apply trapping and other movements like chi sao pak sao
tan sao and so on to a move agressive style like mixing it as in keeping an
open mind yea u can win in a fight just useing trapping

Brandon Kousanon says:

So then what is wing chun good for ???

KomBat147 says:

It is not the style but the person using the style!

black5corpion76 says:

Maybe u haven’t see master Wong channel. He give pain to his opponents.
With his wing chun. It can be use for street self defense

Tristan Clark says:

I think it’s one dimensional like a lot of other arts, now if you take a
good boxer and teach him wing chun that takes dirty boxing to a whole other
level… no one art is complete. I agree with everything you said about
wing Chun but I believe for someone like me that’s trained in multiple arts
even though I just do mma now it would make you more dangerous in close.
Wing Chun is much more effective if you know your range, know how to box
and close the distance to get that close range stuff off. That being said
if your gonna do one art alone I agree with everything you said…

Mateus Moro says:

What’s the best stance for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Tansin Hussain says:

How do you push bullies away using self defense?

Jake Fuenty says:

I’m a boxer mainly,I did some muay Thai and karate ,I practice some
wrestling and bjj with a coupe friends of mine…and the trapping range is
what wing chin is concentrated on which is only good if there try in to get
you in a clinch or wrestle you because wing chin uses body
positioning, strike deflexion, arm position and speed mainly and if someone’s
try in to grab you..you can use wing chin to quickly deflect there hand and
land a elbow, chop to the neck, palm strike,or something else quickly wing
chun is definatley not your first choice but after you have your main style
in order its a good supplement it can greatly help you stop wrestler or a
Thai clinch you just have to use it right trapping is the range between
boxing and clinch and its the most misunderstood range of all because it
goes by quicker than the others in trapping range u have one or two shots u
can this before your out of it again which is why wing chun is not a good
self defence art they practice this and only this range all the time so
like I said after you got your main style down you can use this to give you
a big boost later it really helps if your trying to land elbows

64BitGamerHD says:

Can karate be a good form of self defence? Just asking.

GV Scar says:

“When a big, heavy haymaker or hook is coming in it’s going to be tough to
block that way”
Haha Shane just stop talking about crap you have no idea about.

Daryl Chia says:

Thanks Shane! Not everyone has the courage to openly give their honest
opinions. Respect.

Uncle Victor says:

Overall, it LOOKS cool. But that’s pretty much where it stops. Granted it
may help you a bit with defense if you are a boxer, but in a street fight
it’s useless because there is no offense to it.

Same thing with that “52” bullshit (hood version of Wing Chun). It’s cool
for maybe a pop lockin contest, but in a fight against someone well trained
its just gonna get you hurt.

Ben Beno says:

wing chun is not about “fighting” but about “get the job done as fast as
possible”. Including for instance kicking in the balls etc.

Space Lemon. says:

What about Jeet Kun Do (Hope I am saying that right)? You know, the martial
art that Bruce Lee invented for specifically this reason. Is that any good
for reall fighting? Have you seen very much of it? I was interested in
learning it, but would apreciate a few words about it from someone who is
well versed in real fighting.

tarek mrkzen says:

Hi Shane, I respect you a lot but i kind of desagree with you on that one.
Wing Chun has A LOT of really bad practitioners out there, but it has a few
good ones and they are the ones im going to talk about. Wing Chun is a
concept base art, not technique. It is not very good for sport fighting
because it was developed for SELF DEFENCE. It works better when somebody is
going to attack you. This is the main idea of the art: 1 Wait for the
moment when you are sure your opponent will attack 2 Strike him as soon as
possible 3 If you are faster than him, you will hit him before he hits you,
if you are not, you will probably crash your arms with his 4 When contact
is made, you Chi Sao/sticky hands (that exercise of short range reflexes)
comes to play. This stage is very similar to wrestling, where you feel your
opponent pressure because of contact and use it against him 5 Continue to
go forward, pressure the opponent, dont give him space (this is why the guy
in the video was backing up, he had no space to punch, kick plus he was
getting punched at the same time. Here the footwork has a great importance)
attack, attack and attack untill he is down. The thing you mentioned about
blocking a heavy punch or intercepting, I think it is the hardest things to
get good at because it requires a lot of practice to kind fo predict the
first punch. But this is hard in every art, it requires practice. So, I
think it is a good art for self defence, not for street fight or sport
fight (It is not designed for that)

brandon hileman says:

Cmon shane, you should know its the practitioner not the art. Go talk to
Izzos warrior Academy about it not being effective xD you should judge the
art as a whole not by what you know of it. ANY art is good in a
streetfight, IF you know how to translate your tools. Pretty disappointed
in this one, but keep up the good work man.

tommyluongg says:

3 months of wing chun vs 3 months of muay thai. Muay thai would probably
win.
3 years od WC vs 3 years of MT??? I would say MT but then again, all down
to the individual. How many advanced WC fighters do you know out there
compared to that of MT?
So many UFC fighters primarily learnt bjj and/or MT.. so i would go with
MT. Majority of the “undefeated”/”champions” come from a muay thai
background

applesauceprod says:

But…Ip Man…lol jk

Michael Jovan says:

Shane first off thank you love your videos and advice! Second would love to
hear your opinion on others as well, I would like to hear what you think
about kempo or Ed parkers system or even kajukenpo much respect Mike! (but
understand if you don’t want to offer your opinion).

Luna says:

Take a look at Bruce Lee and learn from him. He studied under this art for
years and made changes to it. His mindset was “Do what works” Which is why
when he created JKD he was constantly changing it. In a Street fight you do
what you know works for you.

Jeff McDuffie Jr. says:

:ATTENTION ATTENTION:
Jeet kune do also sucks so does every other martial art except GUN FU my
own system I study is from china called IRON CROTCH NEI KUNG my to mystical
powers are I can take full force hits to the nuts and destroy any pussy at
will I highly recommend it for self defense in all situations also why only
learn to punch kick and grappling for? Why not rip out eyes, break the
trachea bone in the throat, snap necks? What ever happen to real invincible
techniques?

Bill Murray says:

Actually, Wing Chun has footwork very similar to what you have shown in
your videos, except this martial art chooses to compromise a bit of
lightness and rotation range to bring a faster ability to sink in.
Problem is, most schools focus waaaaaay too much on chi sao (what people
call sticky hands) and some don’t even spar or train for power.
So in fact, it’s all about training and the fact that a lot of schools are
just lazy.

A lot of chunners, especially what I call the hippie chunners, will hate me
for saying the following, but a lot of modern techniques used and abused
today already are in Wing Chun. For example, one handed clinch is in the
muk jan form, first move. And the list goes on.

There is no secret, without proper physical conditionning, Wing Chun, Muay
Thai, Boxing and everything else is crap that doesn’t work. Someday, Wing
Chun schools will understand this…

That being said, whatever the school, Wing Chun is still the very best
self-defense practice you can get, way above krav maga, penchak silat, etc
one of the reasons why being that it is specifically tailored to that
domestic conflict range.
