Into the Fray Episode 190: Self-Defense Shotgun’s For Home-Defense

Choosing a self-defense shotgun can be just as confusing as choosing a handgun. There are currently so many options that making a selection can be complex. Action type, stock style, and sight options are all very personal. But you must remember that shotguns have limitations. The shotgun is not the one-size-fits-all problem-solver of the self-defense world. Chief among the downsides are the limited ammunition capacity and difficulty in reloading the shotgun. Even with an extended magazine tube, you will have fewer than 10 rounds. Yes, they are big, powerful rounds, but you still need to put them on target; which can be difficult if you don’t train to deal with the stout recoil and strong report. Shotguns, like every other defensive tool, will work well only if you take the time to get proper training, then practice what you have learned. Don’t buy a shotgun thinking it will keep you safe just because it is a shotgun. Tom Elliott says:

I have a Mossberg 590 with a pistol grip/folding stock with the sidesaddle, trijicon front sight, extended safety and a bayonet lug is standard (it uses the M-16/AR-15 bayonet)

And Norr says:

In each of your shotguns videos, I would at least minimally cover choices in ammunition. For home defense (HD), I normally use 12 Gauge 2.75 inch 00 Buckshot. Some people suggest Birdshot and that can work sometimes in HD but I think it leaves you more vulnerable.

vepraksoldat says:

That why I love my semi-auto shotguns like my Remington versa max 8 rounds and 1 in chamber and my Vepr 12 with 10 round magazine and one more magazine loaded just in case. I am also waiting for stamp from ATF, due to acquiring Vepr 12sbs. Which is better option for home defense. lol

iamedbytes says:

I love Hollywood. A person is clearing a house and sees a threat… he then racks a round. They just love the action and sound of racking a round, even when it makes no sense. Want to confuse the bad guy? Make a recording of a shotgun being racked. Put speakers in your house. Play that recording through different speakers. One guy racking may not impress but two, three or more? Just having fun.

machineguntongue says:

Slugs are devastating in the gel. Cavity creators.

jrc99us says:

I love my Mossberg Maverick 88 7+1 12 gauge.

Xaun Loc says:

Back in the days when police carried revolvers, detectives carried snub nose revolvers there was always the argument over 5 vs 6 rounds — with the inevitable comment "if you can't get the job don't with five, one more isn't going to help." Obviously that wasn't always true, but in reality at that time (before spray&pray) there was a lot of truth to it because it was unusual for an officer to fire more than one or two rounds.

Here we have a totally different set of circumstances surrounding the question How Many Rounds Is Enough? High round counts may make for interesting stages in various supposedly 'practical' matches, but how many civilians (not involved in criminal activity) are ever going to find themselves in a home defense scenario facing a dozen armed intruders — or even four.

Yes, you need to aim a shotgun. And, yes, it is possible to miss – but at interior distances, if you have identified your target and aimed before firing, a clean miss seems rather unlikely. So how many rounds do you realistically need for 'home defense'??

Now, personally, I subscribe to the school of thought that there is no such thing as too much ammo, but I do NOT subscribe to the notion that there is no such thing as enough ammo. So, yes, I do have some extra ammo with my home defense shotgun, but not because I feel the need for a few more rounds. My home defense shotgun is stored with the chamber empty, the tube full of my chosen interior load, and the additional ammo is my 'other' load if I find a need for more reach and/or more penetration.

I really think that too many times we see "experts" explaining "self defense" and "home defense" to civilians from a LEO or (worse still) military mindset.

Bunny Rabbit says:

Ooh, I'm excited for the melee shotgun video!

Esoteric Hint says:

Does home insurance cover self defense situations?

George Clipner says:

Great vid. looking forward to more info on defensive shotgun. Good job Slim.

ilovenh1 says:

I'm sorry but unless you live in an apartment building and are concerned with over penetration a shotgun is not the best home defense weapon.
A tactically set up rifle like an AR-15 or a AK-47 is much better.

sprofitt777 says:

In most cases you won't need more than 5 or 6 rounds, in a self defense situation.
