The central condition is that you cannot exceed the danger to your life in defending yourself. He didn’t once put the knife in his hands or threaten him with it. The simple fact that he had a knife on his person does not give you the right to shoot, lots of people carry knives clipped on their shorts. Only once your life is threatened with a deadly weapon can you reciprocate.
