Richard Sabo says:

Great and critically important topic!

Confidence to the point of complacency is overconfidence. We do need a minimum level of confidence in order to be reasonably sure that we /can/, as in we have enough ability, to do the tasks under ideal circumstances. If we don't have that minimum level of confidence, we have little probability of success in a real-world situation, where the circumstances will be as unideal for us as the agressor can make it. Human threats are adaptive, and they specifically look for complacency and routines in their targets to help them plan the timing of their attacks.

I think that a much more important factor than confidence, is resolve. Confidence is a matter of perception, knowledge, and to some extent emotion. However, your senses can be fooled, your knowledge can be difficult to access under pressure or even outright faulty, and emotions come and go like the tide. Resolve is a matter of the will and the spirit. It allows you to focus more on the outcome that must be achieved, and less on the unavoidable factors and risks that we can't control.

Example from Episodes 1 & 2: Home Invasion
We have our plan, we have our materiál, we have our procedures, and we practice. We have what I think is a reasonable level of confidence. Just like you said, an invader gets to decide when, where, and how to attack. They get to decide how to go about trying to subvert our processes, breach our engineering controls, and avoid or overcome our active measures. We don't know when to expect them, how many of them, or what they're coming with, so it would be overconfident of me to think that we're just going to "handle it" and come out scott-free. However, I have resolved that I will not give up, that I will not let the agressor harm my family, and that I will not allow myself to fail; even if it should cost me my life. If I cannot pull out a decisive win against the agressor in this scenario, then a pyrrhic victory is acceptable. If I can't win, then my new objective is making for ∆@mn-sure that they don't win either.

"I am an American Airman… And I will not fail." The first and last lines of the Airman's Creed. Resolve.

Chone Martinez says:

Amen brother!!!!

Chone Martinez says:

On that day, when you have to fight for your life, the only thing that will save you is if you prepared for that moment. Know that there are people training right now with the intent to hurt the innocent. Know that there are people that will specifically target the weak and vulnerable. Sometimes in the process of saving lives you have to take lives. It's not always about keeping the blood in the good. Sometimes you have to let it out of the bad.

Johnny America says:

The guy from Oklahoma had a pretty solid plan, keep an AR handy and use it when criminal thugs break in your castle.

2016 Road King says:

I have heard, read, and do believe that when you get to a point where you feel you have mastered whatever you feel you are good at that is when you stop learning, stop growing, and embrace an arrogance/cockiness. I know I don't want to be like that in anything. For example: I have had my motorcycle endorsement since 1984 and I am a safe, good rider, but I don't know everything and can always use more rider training to sharpen my skills. Same can be said for guns: we can always learn new tactics or better tactics. God is in control.

hugomcbento says:

Fear keeps you alive.

Tommy Wooten says:

Thanks for your videos brother…

Joe Doe says:

The only thing I am confident in is that Jesus died on the cross to take the punishment for my sins, and because of Him I am saved. I am forgiven. Amen.

Naxxton A says:

Always enjoy watching before class.

Jodi Mandelias says:

Keeping your mental state sharp. You can't plan for crazy, whether jihadi or drug addict so you always need to stay sharp. Another good video.

Kit Bloke says:

Reminds me of my boss, he isn't big on safety systems, but he is just naturally the safest dude because he is always weary and not over confident.

greg merryman says:

Confidence in your gear and your decision making before contact are about all you can control. All the other factors are decided by someone else.

Another great video and topic.

MatteoSixSeventyFour says:

Another good episode. Confidence to a degree is good. But as you said it can easily lead to complacency.

Hunts4Food67 says:

Great topic, thanks for sharing. God Bless!
