How Should Boxers and Wrestlers Defend Kicks in MMA and Self Defense?

Obviously there is a time and place to check kicks. If you haven’t figured that out… you can’t fight. But this is a nice little counterpunch for people who would prefer to primarily punch or push forward into clinch/takedown range. Should definitely check kicks when they are close proximity taekwondo. Usually takes them out of the next move

KidDinomite07 says:

Thank you for this breakdown, makes a lot more sense now. The only questionable aspects, IMO are would leaning into the kicks make more sense than checking against an opponent who uses leg kicks effectively(Barboza, young Aldo)? Also, when in competition, would the judges be able to determine this as a type of check vs. a leg raise check? It could mean the difference in a close split decision. Thanks again for the video, you have some great stuff!

cc360 says:

I don't check kicks. Because people who are shot, can't kick me. #realdefense

The Tide Rises says:

If he uses his right hand as a proper balance/defense the counter cross is irrelevant. If you're going to eat it, definitely move into it though.

Check–>stomp–>inside leg kick counter.

S. Tapia says:

Wait until the muscles cramp. He isn't snapping his kick. I work through taller opponents with speed and obviously distance until the points I have worked create weak points and ultimately openings.

Last Word says:

this is taking a kick not defending. it also only works for low kicks.

Ravensthrone Hellwinds says:

Bottom line is that boxing alone is a poor method for self defense and i know of no boxer who has ever won in the UFC unless that person had some martial arts training to go with their boxing skills..Boxers should stick to fighting other boxers in a ring.

Chris Blanchard says:

Why is their a letter N at the end of the word damn 🤔

Tristan Ruusmaa says:

I can not spar for long im my gym because I check kicks and every kicker brakes their legs all the fucking time.

Ash Hugs says:

This helps to an extent but it still hurts, the benefit of a check is if you do it right and hurt the opponent theyll think twice before throwing another

K.J. Meijer says:

You're supposed to set them up with punches and the low kicks require more rotation. The check should not be knee forward but more to the outside that way movement is more fluid.

Adriel says:

Read your bible

The Four of Apocalypse says:

A guy tried this shit on me. Once you know they do it, you just need to throw a harder kick. They won't be bracing it for long.

Brett Jackson says:

It depends on what works for you. In most cases, your opponent can turn your own tactics against you if you use it as your *Go To*.

Ravensthrone Hellwinds says:

The problem seems to be that when you want to make boxing the beat all art as if there is some sort of grudge going on between martial artists and boxers so you boxers have that chip on your shoulders to prove your art the best of the best. You should worry more about it being used as something to protect your selves in a real fight and i would think you would want to fix the holes the right way.Your incorrect about sport style fighting being good for the streets as well as in the ring you are trained to not strike certain points on the body as well as having to follow the rules and once well trained that way you have limited your self to being able to defend your self on the street were there is no rules.

James Dotson says:

That's your "theory" and probably works somewhat but do you think you know more than Thai Boxers or Bas Ruten who do check these kicks.

Extasse says:

Inside leg kicks still freak me out. Can’t tell if they’re going for a proper leg kick or they’re actually aiming for your groin (even by mistake).

Franky Turrizo says:

Have you ever even been in a real fight?

highview seeker says:

i saw u fighting on streetbeefs u suck dawg i aint taking ur advice

Yass Apud says:

I fight a thai dude an check like this, was a bad idea, your knee gets fucked up. And you don't now if its a low or sweep leg kick to trow of balance.

Matthew Luna says:

This is something great. Even in boxing I was thought to flex my stomach and take the stomach kick or punch, and counter with a nice solid cross. That will turn the tides of a fight.

Ravensthrone Hellwinds says:

Hard to hurt if you try your ideas from this video you made against a silat master like this one they will shatter your leg in one kick and they dont fight lined up with you like most fighters but if you really wanna learn to fight watch this channel for awile.

Ravensthrone Hellwinds says:

I am not a big fan of boxing as a self defense method but the secrets you are looking for lay in the art of Silat Hard to hurt.Look it up .
