Guard would have been better off reloading, in the time it took him to go out the door, so he would be prepared for another potential attack in the space he just successfully defended.
By going out the door, he put himself at a huge disadvantage: no cover, no concealment, increased avenues of attack and going into the unknown. Not to mention, the bad guys knew the guard would have to come out that door to chase them. What if they were aimed in on that spot? What's the point of going out there? Just hold the position you're in.
