Been on the receiving end in my 20s, and got hit im my knee cap. Didn't go down felt no pain, and than cop kneed me in my liver like he was Van Damme😊. Nothing than they started pleading with me just to detain me. I was 255lb off most muscle, stronger than all off the cops, and taller, 6'4", born in Croatia. Case was dismissed after they lied about why theh did what they did and should have sued them, but I wanted to be a cop as well, but instead joined Army as Infantryman couple years later. Also I was on few shots off tequila at time and maybe why I didn't feel pain but also nothing next day. So depends, peper spray absolutely worked when it hit me directly in the eye, I was just out vision, gone, breathing difficult… Just terrible. Than in military gas chamber CS gas and that was bad but easier to handle as soon as you come to fresh air its all gone as its just gas does not stick to your face.
Ok so any law enforcement officer knows that we do not intentionally strike the head or face with a baton. The baton is an intermediate weapon. If your life is threatened, just use your firearm. If all you have on you is a baton and your life is threatened, then do what you have to do of course.
As a 28 year deputy with a very large West Coast Sheriff’s Department, many of us carried lead-filled leather saps. All of the weight is forward. Those ASPs, the weight is rearward. The impact from them ain’t sh*t. The leather sap on the other hand, was very effective, and very low key. You could whip it out and smack the suspect and get it back in your pocket, and the bad guy would be stunned and think you hit him with your fist. Very, very effective law enforcement tool that is largely prohibited now, mostly because they were very effective. The ASP batons? Not so much.
Yeah I don't like Pepper spray that much either, I prefer Pepper gel as it's stronger and clings to them rather than just spraying at them. But that being said, a firearm, a tactical knife, or a taser should be your first line of defense when possible.
Used it a few times, but once in a deadly force situation and already had it extended in a full sprint running up to a downed incapacitated fellow officer on his back with a huge suspect straddled on his chest choking officer with one hand and pulling on his gun in the holster with the other. Decided to keep sprinting and cocked it over my shoulder so the tip was behind me and a complete over hand strike to the top of his head as I slowed down my sprint to a stop. Do you know what that sounds like when you crack the skull? Like a home run hit with an aluminum bat on a hard baseball. Identical! Only someone who has done that or seen it done would know. Guy looked up at me like he was pissed and I was like oh no damn, he gonna get up and kill me now. So I whipped it around after it bounced off his head and did a side strike to him on his noggin and that one did it and he slumped over. Officer regained consciousness and rolled the guy over off of him and we hooked him up. Bloody mess. Guy lived with a cracked skull. Found a Cuban cigar in my box the next evening before starting midnight shift from officer.
