Sean's best course would have been to contact the police about his stolen cellphone, and told them its current location and let them deal with it. I know, a lot of us want to get after the thieves, but this is what we have the cops for. He has few if any witnesses, maybe some security cameras in the parking lot. I hope this turns out in his favor. But for those of you who have that "find my phone" app and it is stolen, give that information to the police and update them as it moves.

First Tacoma is a S-hole of a town with a lot of low life’s and that mall is a magnet for trouble. He did a lot of things wrong. If he traced his phone to the mall , it’s right off of I-5 in the center of town and police station is only a few blocks away, WTF. he should of notified police first about everything and waited for them to show up and put yourself in a reconnaissance position and observe the suspected vehicle and wait ,before proceeding any further. And situational awareness is priority just in case things go sideways. The bad guys in this case where watching him the hole time. You got to think bad things could happen in a mall setting. Take time , calm down and think things through. He could’ve avoided all this just by pulling back a bit. To get involved in a shooting incident in a mall parking lot over a cellphone isn’t worth it. If the bad guys start shooting and you have distance between you and them it’s better in my opinion to take cover and hit the ground if at all possible and assess the situation. If you have a fair amount of distance between yourself and the bad guys that are shooting from a moving target-car the odds a pretty high that they will miss you ; and in this case they did and he was able to return fire , but for what. This incident if your in , you have a lot more options and control over the outcome. Sometimes it’s better to retreat to fight another day but it’s hard because you want to kick the bad guys ass. This is where practical training comes into play.
