Did ‘Subway Vigilante’ Shoot 4 Black Teens in Self-Defense?
Three days before Christmas in 1984, five bullets were fired at four black teenagers on the No. 2 train in New York City by a white man with an illegally-owned handgun. The incident divided the city into people who supported the so-called “Subway Vigilante” and others who said the shooting was a racist act of violence. He approached them after the boy asked for money and started shooting. I would have been on his side if they walked up and then he fired because he was scared. His police interview should have put him behind bars he did it on purpose and was bragging about it.
I understand the terrifying circumstances and if he shot them in self defense. And while it may have started that way, shooting a guy in the back who essentially surrendered by laying on the ground, that isn’t self defense. If he stopped a shooting the one guy and the rest turned and started running and he let them go, that’s fine and I applaud him. But shooting the first guy then hunting down his friends making sure that all had a bullet in them, that’s murder at that point
