China reviews loan shark killing case, triggering a self-defense debate
Intentional assault or excessive self-defense? This was the question a provincial court was trying to decide on a highly controversial case in east China’s Shandong Province. A young man named Yu Huan stabbed four people, killing one, after he and his mother were humiliated and abused by debt collectors from a local loan shark. The first verdict sentenced Yu to life imprisonment, triggering widespread fury. The case has been taken to the provincial high court. What will the second verdict be? How much has public opinion swayed the result? Liu Xin is joined by Bai Xianyue, managing partner of Chenyi Law School, and Jiang Su, associate professor from the Law School of Peking University.
