At most they could be out more than an insurance deductible. A lot of people without an auto loan don't carry comprehensive coverage so insurance wouldn't pay for for the car.
Maximum effective range of the carjackers pistol to me says it's completely justified. Carjacker is still a threat and in the act of committing a forcible felony. And carjacker never left the scene, it's safe to assume he could have is gun pointed at him still.

Probably the victim is a off duty cop (is very hard for a ordinary citizen to buy a gun legaly in Brazil) and he acted this way in order to arrest the perp.
Did he use deadly force appropriately? In western countries, no. He will even get jailed, get sued and lose for that sucker punch. Anywhere else in the world, yes. It's too bad he missed.
