Are Combat Sports Enough for Self Defense? • ft. Paul Sharp • Self Defense Expert

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fWpYRz46kyw Many combat sports practitioners believe that just combat sports are enough for self defense, yet quite a few self defense experts criticize this type of an approach. To find the right answer I asked the help of Paul Sharp – a self defense expert, active police officer, BJJ black belt to answer this question. Kirby Little says:

MMA is starting to crack….it only teaches kicking and strikes and chokes, and does NOTHING for weapons defense or multiple attackers…FUCK MMA….start incorporating a mix of Aikido and Krav Maga for TRUE street survival….

Way I see it… Combat sports is fighting to win a tournament. Self defense is making sure your bacon (and that of whoever is with you) gets out of a fire intact. You can excel in self-defense without being able to throw a punch (by being a terrific negotiator, for example, or a really fast runner) and you can utterly fail at it despite being a world-class boxer (multiple RL examples).

Combat sports give you options, tools to use. Self-defense teaches you when and how to use them.

Roberto Luongo says:

Please interview a kenpo, kajukenbo or a kravmaga Guy to get the other side of the perspective please .

Sam jeb says:

Finally some one who spoke right !! Combat sport are the way to start with cause it trains not only ur body but also ur mind to get used to facing, analyzing and fighting wich make more tolerant to stress situation and barely fearless. Than like the pro guy Mr.Paul said u can add some self defense technics to fill the small gaps of other real situations !!

Kain Tuffin says:

Stop making fucking videos young cunt! When motherfuckers look up martial arts & things like that, they don't want to see you… An ammature twat. They want to see the real shit. No offence, but the internet is full of shit like this. You have never had a fight in your life mate. Please fuck off

PerunaMuayThai says:

I totally agree. Utilizing some basics from combats sports in a slightly different way would be a wonderful start to street defense. Also, knowing that you train opposite those highly experienced people then become matched against someone who is not used to it means a higher chance of success one on one leading to the quick escape. Multiple attackers sucks for any person regardless of background so gotta deal with the immediate threat and get the heck out.

Street boxing UK says:

Nobody would deny that combat sports are great prep for self-defence. If you're doing combat sports, your exposure to technique and pressure will most likely be way beyond that of the average self-defence practitioner. It's more about what is the most useful/effective way to train for self-defence and that's a question about time for results. 90% of what I learn in fight sports aren't really directly attributable to the street. Training on the 10% that will deliver the results I need is a more effective use of time. Time isn't usually a factor for sports fight people. It's a factor when teaching civilians self-defence, however. It's civilians who are going to need it, rarely fight sports people.

Alex F says:

Athleticism is also often overlooked. People who train combat sport have a good body conditioning. If you just practice self defense but gaz out after 30 seconds of intensity…it's not very reassuring…

Callumbia Colliner says:

This is pretty much it. The only thing I would add is that keyboard warriors always say this will work, that won't work, when in reality no one knows what will work in each situation. In my opinion, the MOST important element of self defence is being confident when people get close or start attacking. When somebody stands too close to you, or is punching/kicking you it's real uncomfortable. If you can get comfortable in that situation you're halfway there. Martial arts are great for this, but I feel MMA sparing is even better.

George Dubois says:

all depends on how you train, alot of sport combat guy will most likely do good in a real self-defense situation, do to the fact of there sparring experience, that doesn't mean however traditionalist won't do good either there are some traditionalist that do pressure test things and spar, so once again it all comes down to how u train and apply what u have learned.

K Ismail says:

What he said was absolutely true.

Charles Collier says:

I largely agree with him, but will add a clarifying comment. People with a background in martial arts that includes pressure testing are likely to be closer to readiness for self-defense than those without that experience. There are lost of people who spend a lot of time in dojos, and who can perform all kinds of beautiful techniques in non-threatening scenarios with compliant practice partners, but they tend to be woefully unprepared for real world situations.

Daniel W says:

Somebody that only trains martial arts for self defense but never pressure tests themselves will be way lacking compared to somebody that trains combat sports.

Roberto Luongo says:

Hahaha what crock of shit . I hope you don’t buy that. It’s a wash in reality they are def different from one another . Reflex and timing for anyone learning something new is the same process . Repetition . I would say it’s harder for someone in MMA to break some of their habits to transform and come “down” to the self defense world . Poor person to interview .

Steve BB says:

the problem with this kind of debate is that everyone with a bit of training thinks they know how they'd react and what they'd do in a real life violent encounter.

nohn clift says:

the biggest fail in any self defence or combat sport is the shock of several people surround you, suprise you and cause you to suffer an adreniline dump, which will cause you to freeze, fight or flight (run), most people will fall into freeze. It is this that needs to be over come by most people, even people who do combat sports, self defence type groups (krav maga , spear), because this is the part that is not trained. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZJqDC-JTtSQ
