7 Martial Arts for Self Defense

Martial arts have been a staple in many societies for many centuries. Mainstream ideals of martial arts usually cause the average person to think of something like Karate or Kung Fu. However, fighting styles are not just relegated to a certain region. Places like Russia, France, India, Brazil, America…all have their own unique forms of martial arts. But, these art forms are more than just something to be taught in random schools. They offer practical ways to defend yourself against attackers of all sorts. So, with so many to choose from, which is best? Duncan Horne says:

AT A VERY YOUNG AGE I TRIED KUSHAINKIE, KARATE, been so long I am not sure If I even spelt it correctly. I was taught by a British twice middleweight champion at that time, Jeff Wybrow, again excuse the spelling. Topman at the time was a man called Steve Arnell. Once again, pardon my spelling. My only regret was being so young & not persevering & staying with It. Any youngsters out there do not make the same mistake I did & give up. It sculptures you Into a positive & progressive member of society & sets you on a path where you remain focused & a positive+ person, which also makes you an all-around better Human Being & member of society, full of your own conscious abilities & confidence. So If you ever want to amount to someone positive & choose martial arts, remember per saviour because you only get out of It what you put Into It. Do not make the mistake I did. You will only live to regret It. Like I did! KEEP FOCUSED & REMEMBER YOU ONLY GET OUT OF IT WHAT YOU PUT IN TO IT!

Travis Thompson says:

Well no shit…. Who would have thought mixed martial arts would be the most effective

Nick says:

It's the ultimate question for martial artists or people looking for functional self protection is, which art is best. Personally I think the question is in error. A little bit like asking, which item of clothing is best. You would reply, best for what? the cold, the heat, for comfort, it depends. Same with a fighting style. The problem with a style is that we adapt ourselves to fit the rules of that particular art. Instead, we should adapt the style to fit us. Our strengths, weakness and body type. Take concepts and techniques from all styles and build your own. Take what is useful, reject what is useless and add what is specifically your own.

Ira Lee says:

In my humble opinion wing chun kung fu is the best system in street fights. There are no high kicks like in tae kwan do or hard hand training as with Okinawan or Japanese karate. You can literally fight in a phone booth. Wing chun was the basis for jeet kun do as developed by Bruce Lee, who trained under Yip Man, the ultimate wing chun grand master. Ira Lee Ph.D.

Tonya Patterson says:

Just run as fast as you can….make your opponent tired. Lol

KB H says:

Kung fu is not on the list wow. That where the martial art started .

Jack Wise says:

I'm 75 and have been doing some research as to which martial art might be the best for an old fart ust trying to defend himself. I have a carry license, but, as everyone knows, even if your life depends on it, the use of deadly force opens a whole can of severe problems. I use a cane and thought about using a sword cane but again, if you stab someone…even an aggressive attacker, the resulting shit will hit the legal fan. Question: is kendo the art of fighting with a stick (rod, staff) I would appreciate any advice from anyone schooled in martial arts. I am not looking for any fancy drop kicks or flying kicks…just plain self defense against someone who doesn't play by any rules

Napoleon Fernandez says:

Any Martial Art would work if the rules and sport rules are override to focus on causing damage to the opponent, but Krav Maga is best because is focus is self defense
