.22 LR Handgun for Self Defense? CCI Stinger Ammo Test

Test of the CCI Stinger, 32 gr copper-plated hollowpoint, from the Ruger SR22 handgun. The SR22 has a 3.5″ barrel. Will the short barrel affect performance o…

MORONS. No rimfire cartridge is appropriate for self-defense, ever. .22lr
is for gangland assassinations. If you aren’t able to buy a decent caliber
defensive weapon, you’re probably not allowed to own a gun at all.

Matthew Psi says:

Very nice done . I have a snub nose 38 as my carry but most of the time I
practice with a snub nose 22lr ( Ruger LCR 22 ) which sometimes I carry
also. I feel confident that a well placed shoot at 5-7 yds it will stop a
threat especially with 8 rounds. But I will never carry a 22 LR semi-auto
because of jams even though I have 2 of them . What do you think?

toyrunner87 says:

I hate how it says “read instruction manual before using firearm”. Rugers
attempt to suck up to the Nanny State?

aznperson8 says:

I love that your gel is clear. It’s so nice and easy to see (as are a lot
of things in this video; great quality).

Max Sterling says:

the caliber is not the point. the FACT is, rimfire is not as reliable as
centerfire. so in the situation that every single shot counts, you cannot
gamble your life on the unreliable 22LR.
so get any 9mm/357/40/45, but not the rimfire.
rimfire is perfect for plinking/target, but not the life-safety-related
personal defense, period.

xezpra says:

You should always use that clear ballistic gel

sturmcat says:

I own a Ruger SR22. It is great .22 pistol. I think one of the best out
there. With the right ammunition it is easily a good choice for
self-defense, at home or CCW.

Kakashi101sensi says:

Shot to the face and through the brain will kill everything and anything
that moves, I wouldnt commend a 22 lr through a handgun against a 1 ton
grizzly or animal for that matter but anything under 300 lbs being shot
through the brain will die from a 22lr

Robert Bowen says:

very good video. Enjoyed the info I have a box of stingers for self
defense but I have to look at that choice now. I guess I will use them in
the rifle instead. I have a bunch of 36 grain hollow pts which sound like
a better choice for the pistols. Have you tested velocities in a longer
barreled pistol like the ruger mark ll?

jtjjbannie says:

I’m SO glad you started using clear gel!
It makes your videos all that much better. Thank you.

toynazi says:

As much as i love my 22’s. I would not carry one for self defence.

BloodofPatriots says:

If the intruder moves forward toward the shooter, the target becomes bigger
as it gets closer; therefore it becomes easier to hit. I’m not sure where
you’re shooting, but putting 4 .22LR shots downrange in 3 seconds is a
fairly common thing to see at most ranges that allow multiple fire. And,
no, it doesn’t take a full automatic pistol. The .22LR has almost no
recoil, therefore the reacquisition of a target takes 2, maybe 3 tenths of
a second.

Mad Dawg says:

Getting off two shots is far different than getting off 4- unless you have
a full automatic pistol. Putting 2 into a subject after you start shooting
at said subject might be one thing; assuming that the subject is going to
stay stationary while you attempt to put 4 in their direction- is another.
The only reasonable way someone would stay stationary is if you have
already instantly killed him/her during those first two shots.. Shooting
paper is far different than shooting live people.

BloodofPatriots says:

Practiced .22LR shooters do it all the time. In fact, 2 shots per second is
fairly easy — its called the “double-tap” and takes less than an hour at
the range for a newbie shooter to master. Now, putting 2 shots on target
per second with a .22LR takes practice, but its attainable for anyone.

BloodofPatriots says:

Stop thinking, it makes that lone brain cell of yours work too hard. LOL

BloodofPatriots says:

Your reading comprehension sucks. Of course SEALs are Navy (and “SEALs” is
the proper way to write that not “seals”). Why do you think I gave two NAVY
bases for the SEALs (Little Creek and Coronado)? You may now apologize, kid.

mrjwynia says:

seals are navy not army what the hell are you talking about

Devin Heape says:

that was a gr8 test. i like the idea of 22 for defense. maybe videos like
this will result in a better hollow point that will expand at lower
velocity’s.

brett farv says:

great review!

frttrn1 says:

I could just grab my snub nose .357! Keep in mind you may not be the one
defending your home! And the others in you house might not feel comfortable
shooting something that powerful. So there’s nothing with choosing a weapon
that everybody feels comfortable firing!

frttrn1 says:

I’ve been asking the same question for the last 30 years! “Would you rather
be shot with 1 round from a 45, 1 from a 357, 2 from a 9mm, or 2 from a
22lr? Personally, I don’t want to shot at all! So when the Gun comes out,
it’s time to go! But I personally think a great home defense system is a
Pump Action 12 Gauge! There is no mistaking that sound! If you rack in your
bed room, the living room will be empty by the time you get there!

jgam727 says:

Nice demonstration of ballistic velocity and penetration tests. Nice review
and informative. It is good to know which grain to use.

MrVolodus says:

If you live in wood house, yes 🙂 Our walls are at least 10″ concrete, that
should be enough to stop it.

ReplenishmentOfOurRepublic says:

and that really would be perfect considering the living environment. cause
that fucker goes through walls

MrVolodus says:

Sure no volunteer would go forward 🙂 But If Im to be shot twice in chest,
I chose .22LR. Im big fan of 22LR but for SelfDefens I choose 9mm. Good
price for training, good energy ( 500J +/-, 45.has 550, 22. has 150), good
ammo capacity, many many guns to choose. For home defense, I choose 7,62×39
rifle (2000J) – one shot stops everyone.

wm moran says:

i disdain the use of plinking vocabulary for the 22 . you plink a toy piano
or banjo, no volunteer would come forward to be a human target. more people
have been shot and killed with the 22. just ask the er’s people find their
stairway to heaven if their lucky.

David Jones says:

I am often asked what .22 is best for home defense for people worried about
recoil and my reply is always: Get a heavy centerfire handgun. A heavy gun
will help soften/reduce felt recoil. Go to the range and fire it. Rinse and
repeat until you are comfortable. Most people get over the fear of recoil
on the first shot.

I own several .22s and love everyone of them but for me to use one for self
defense means I have no other armed option left. A .22 is better than a
stick and IS lethal but most fatalities come by way of bleeding out after
what ever harm is done. A better self defense strategy is to ensure your
attack is stopped by firing MANY high energy projectiles ACCURATELY into
your attacker.
