i wouldn’t carry anything smaller than 9mm. .38s have a high survival rate
when used in self defense [the attacker on the receiving end surviving is
what i’m talking about] and a .22 cannot break the center breast bone,
ballistically if you’re lucky enough to get it between ribs or at a good
enough angle into the abdomen it’ll bounce around when it hits bone and do
a lot of internal damage but it won’t break through the bone itself so a
headshot with .22 as proven recently is survivable because it will bounce
off the skull and a center-mass shot has a high chance of survival unless
it misses bone when entering. That’s simply my take on it.

ditto1958 says:

1. .22 LR probably would not be your first choice, unless it’s the only
kind of gun you are not afraid to shoot. It probably should be your first
choice if you can’t shoot a larger caliber without flinching.
2. Any gun, even a .22 LR, is better for self-defense than almost anything
else that would be practical to use. Rocks, knives, baseball bats,
crowbars, mace, pepper spray… they all have their good points, but a gun
is pretty much almost always better.
3. Would you stand ten feet away from someone and let them shoot at your
with their .22? I sure wouldn’t. Heck, most shooters will probably be more
accurate with a .22 than they would be with a larger caliber.

Alex Morrison says:

I work at a funeral home and have seen plenty of people killed via .22 BUT
I also saw a man that broke into a home, was shot five time center mass
with a .22, killed the woman that shot him with by beating her with a vase
then drove himself to a hospital fifteen minutes away before dying.

Slytiger Survival says:

I agree. 22 LR is not dependable. My FFL also told me that Buds Gunshop
sucks too!

redneckmini14 says:

I prefer 9mm for a self defense gun. its perfectly lethal, has a good
capacity, and doesn’t have too much recoil depending on the gun u use.

GunGlutton says:

i hate the 22. its not even fun. i get as much enjoyment when shooting a 22
as when i shoot a bb gun

GLOCKTACOMA KNIFEGUY says:

I think the glock 42 would be a good firearm for that woman

Peter Spinale says:

After over 3000 rounds through my Mosquito, and having worked it over..
I’ll trust it with CCI minimag… It’s dead reliable. But without those
benefits, I wouldn’t think of using it for SD..

Levi Downing says:

at least get a 25 acp

Fire Lion says:

.22 is gay

Mailbox_Bomber says:

C’mon, Yankee. You know the only real option for a carry gun has to be the
Glock .50.

steyr proof says:

.22 LR is for kids and kids only.

zack9912000 says:

Better than nothing, but as stupid as using the FN5.7 pistol for SD

swiss93boy says:

I shoot my Mosquito nearly everyday with SK ammuniton out of the 500rd can.
Very accurate and reliable! Maybe 10 out of 500rds I have to strike again
(thanks to the SIG’s double action, no problem) and every round since fired
on the 2nd strike. Never had to turn a round or eject it because it would
not fire.

CDubs HasIt says:

The M&P 15-22 with the CCI tactical AR rounds seems to be the most reliable
I’ve experienced so far. I only shoot CCI brand .22LR. I did like the M22
from Winchester as well when it wasn’t so damn expensive. Very little
malfunction in that gun and ammo type. I put the tactical CCI in my marlin
model 60 and I can get about 200 fired without a jam. So I swear by those
tactical .22 CCIs as they have a special wax coating on them with the
truncated cone shape. I also swear by the M&P 15-22. Of course this is just
my experience and opinion.

John Doe says:

I haven’t find a soul who’s willing to take a few 22lr in the chest. But
yea, 22 is not very reliable for self defense.

Aaron Neumeyer says:

In the end, what did she end up with?

benthere422 says:

Marshall, gotta disagree on this. .22 lr ain’t the best but it’s better
than using sharp words for self defense. Know the limits of whatever one
uses and adjust tactics. For a first gun a .22 lr makes lots of sense, man
or woman. A better, more powerful gun may be purchased later. A better
choice may have been a stainless steel revolver. If a round fails, pull the
trigger again.

JKCDLT says:

This man owns a button up batman shirt.

pickin4you says:

OK I am going to go off here. I have been shooting .22lr as long as I have
been shooting and thats been almost 50 years. The statement about not
making it through a “Good” box of rimfire ammo without a misfire, sorry but
your “Good” ammo must be my JUNK ammo. “The Nature Of The Round”.
Please… give me a break. This term has been used so much, and I have
proven to so many on the range, that I can shoot my rimfires all day
without malfunctions, so its NOT THE ROUND. Its cheap asses that do not
want to buy decent ammo. I have not had a rimfire misfire in over 10
years, so your statement is either that of not much rimfire experience,
which you should not be speaking on the efficiency of the round, or your
just full of it. I shoot thousands of rounds per year of rimfire, bolt
action revolver and semi auto, and have yet to have not had a malfunction
in over 10 years, which was also the time I stopped buying anything with
the Remington name on it, or any bulk ammo. I would have no problem
trusting the .22lr for self defense. I know it well, and can get off 10
shots in a mans head while your still shooting a 38 revolver or 9mm. And
for what killer13324 said, a .22lr will indeed shoot though a breast bone.
Hogs have a thick skull, and my grandfather used to kill the hogs for
butchering with .22 shorts, so you guys who think they know what is what,
need some more schooling before speaking.

The thing is to know your gun, your ammo, and hit where you aim…. meaning
practice, practice, practice.

I will get tons of flack on this, but thats fine. I know what I know, and
am tired of hearing that a rimfire is just what it is and ALWAYS
malfunctions because its a rimfire. There are PLENTY of 9mm handguns that
are jam-o-matics, so why not beat down on them and stop with the rimfire
thing. More game has been killed with a .22lr than any other caliber.

cyclecamp1 says:

I call bullshit. I’ve been shooting for 50 years and have NEVER had a
misfire on any 22 LR regardless of manufacturor. I compete every wednesday
during the spring summer and fall, and have never seen ANYONE at the range
have a ‘dud’ 22 lr. Now, do I think it is an effective carry caliber, no,
not really. But it certainly seems that it is a dependable caliber.

rajvader says:

Technical note… The .22 rimfire was not designed for rifles. It was
developed for the first S&W revolver.

Still not a good choice for a defensive weapon. And, with this unending
ammo shortage (especially bulk .22), you’d may as well get something more
potent and reloadable.

Doug Lastname says:

.454 Casual is better then .22LR

Kentrell Harris says:

A KelTec PMR 30 would certainly suffice.

MrRdvs87 says:

Yea… I’ve heard friends who don’t know shit about guns say they want to
get a concealed carry license and then carry a .22 because they did good
when their dad took them to the range.

I carry a 9mm hand gun so I’m not in the camp of having the biggest round
possible but in a stressful situation, a .22 might not be the optimal
choice since you basically are forced to rely ENTIRELY on shot placement.
However, you’re a step ahead of the rest for just choosing to arm yourself.
