1. Avoid combat.
2. If you can't avoid combat have or find and grab a weapon. Know and follow local laws (falling afoul of the law lets authorities use more force than you will have).
3. Inflict enough pain to dissuade the antagonist. DON'T hang around for his friends, the cops, or paperwork.
4. If you find yourself in a hand-to-hand situation attack soft tissue first, bone to bone contact will hurt you. (I broke some of the small bones punching a drunk in the face).
5. If you have learned any of the martial arts and if you know it, are confident with it, and have maintained proficiency, use it.
6. There are no rules. Period.
