The only way to understand how a real fight works and to gain experience is to actually get in a fight. I was in about a dozen school yard fights when I was in high school, but when I was 18 years old 3 men broke into my house to rob me and my roommates and 2 of them carried aluminum baseball bats and one had a wooden axe handle.

I heard a knock at the door at 1am so I got out of bed and answered the door. When you're 18 years old a friend showing up at 1am isn't out of the ordinary. I turned the deadbolt and then the doorknob, and before I could open the door someone kicked it in from the outside. All 3 of these men instantly started beating me with their weapons. For the first 15 seconds all I could do was try to avoid head strikes (I'll never forget the sound inside my head of an aluminum bat ringing as it bounced off of my skull). These guys got in a lot of good licks on my head, forearms, across my back and shoulders, and finally they started screaming "where is the money!? Do you have any jewelry or guns!?" and thats when I realized it was a robbery.

The biggest thing that I remember is just trying to keep these 3 men from circling behind me, and keeping a wide and low horse stance and trying not to get knocked down to the ground. I got in some good punches myself, and eventually these guys got away with $50 and a couple of nice knives I owned.

That was the most intense fight situation I have ever been in. My fight or flight system automatically kicked in and I didn't know I had that type of fight inside of me. I had started with Taekwondo when I was 7, then Kenpo when I was 13. My friends and I used to spar and hit bags all the time when I was an adolescent and into my teens. We were obsessed with fight movies and tried to recreate moves we saw on TV and in movies.

After that home invasion I realized all that goofing off and "training" with my friends really paid off.
