After subbing to your channel a few years ago, I have my head on a swivel at gas stations. I make eye contact to other pumpers. Left hand on pump, right hand on appendix ready for the draw.
Wow if you want a guy to comply, he actually has to know you are there first. Running up and beating him down and over the head is not a great way to get compliance. Then he did not even steal the car…not exactly the brightest of the bunch there.
Another great video lesson. These real world scenarios help put all the training into context, so thanks for posting these.
If I were in that situation, beyond the initial shove, if an attacker kept coming, then I would make the judgment that this attacker is crazy and is not going to let up, so it is go-time. Instead of turning my back on him, chances of survival are higher facing the threat. Knowing how to swivel on the ground using footwork and hip movement is important. This attacker knows how to come from behind, yet is stupid enough to try to strike with the gun, which eliminates all of his distance advantage using a firearm. There wouldn't be much time before he realizes that I am trained and the tide could be turning, so he will start shooting soon to regain the advantage.
Trying to grab and control a gun in motion from the vulnerable bottom position would be difficult if not impossible for me, so at best deflecting it away could buy some time to get back up enough (not necessarily all the way up) to mount a counter attack to do some damage before attempting a disarm.
If I can't get up, then plan B would be to sweep him to the ground, as his balance shifts as he swings his gun at me. Oftentimes, feigning compliance and moving in agony will drop his caution as he comes in for the killing blow, which opens up a vulnerability. His proximity exposes attachment points with the legs, which can result in a takedown.
Of course, I could still get shot, so either option is fraught with risk. But in the absence of choice, and fear for my life, I have to just go for it. With any luck, he will drop his weapon during any counterattack. This happens frequently in real fights, which can cause a scramble for control of it.
Lastly, I really like your point reminding us why first aid and being able to save oneself with an IFAK is just as important as saving somebody else. I have not gotten into the CCW lifestyle yet, but keeping a RATS tourniquet inside one's belt line would seem like a good idea, since a "fanny pack" micro trauma kit is a little too geeky for my svelte corporate image, even though it looks cool as hell on my gun belt. I might have to consider a slightly bigger messenger bag to accommodate something like that, since my "murse" is always with me. I have also moved my car IFAK from the trunk up to the front door side pockets, where they are more easily visible and accessible, should things go down the wrong way.
Generally, I have trained to be unarmed, but be able use any weapon the attacker brings to the party against himself, as well as any environmental tool available as an equalizer.
John..thanks for the ending statement.it can't be said enough..the police will NOT always be there to protect you. Coming from someone with LEO in family.. you can keep dreaming or wake up to reality.
Lots of second guessing in the comments. Sometimes you need fuel and the sun doesn't cooperate. There wasn't much the vic could have done to avoid such malicious intent. The criminal bears all the blame here.
Head on a swivel any time I’m in a transitional space. One of my last nights in Albuquerque I almost got it but I noticed the out of place activity and had already drawn my fire arm before they got out of the car and fortunately for everyone they decided the odds were not in their favor.

Can you give a definition of transitional spaces?
I’m 19 and I have been watching you for over a year now and thanks to you my awareness is active where ever I am.
