I thought I made the testing clear but the dozens of "You should have used HST" comments keep coming up. This test was more or less a quick history lesson and some points, and a ballistic test specifically to test some .45 ACP ammo that didn't do well in my short barrel testing, hoping that more barrel length would help, and with some of them it did. The history was truly hysterical: .38 was no good, but .45 Colt was good. So the powers that be said: "We need a .45 caliber sidearm – but a semi-auto." Not "We need a .45 caliber cartridge as powerful as the .45 Colt, but in a semi-auto." So instead of a 250 grain bullet at 1,000 f/s, they got the .45 ACP 230 grain bullet at 850 f/s. But it "fit the spec" – .45, in a semi-auto; didn't matter that what mattered didn't matter(!). (And that, Johnny, is how we got $3,000 military toilet seats.) Of course, newer loads have made the higher pressure .45 caliber semi-auto (.460 Rowland, anyone?) rounds well beyond the .45 Colt today. But ya gotta laugh.
Over penetration has a warrantless rap IMO. Even 45 ball was effective because it smashes ribs on both sides, and you have a very good chance of blowing the perps spine out. Missing should be a greater worry. Recent cop shootings I've seen are a joke. 15 round mag dumps, and maybe hit the guy twice??? The worse I've seen was a perp holding a person down while beating the victim with an object in the head, and the cop maybe hit him on the 11th shot, and finally took him down with the last couple of shots.
I shoot the full size, steel 1911's fine. I own a Kimber CDP Pro 2 with aluminum frame, and it's a little too much being 63 yrs old. I also own a Para P-40. It would be my choice if I were to carry something that big, and heavy. Thinking of trying a 38 super, or Sig 357 barrel in it for something new to try.
Still mostly hump my LCR in 327. So easy just to stick it in your pocket, and forget about it. Great round as well.
A lot of guys get confused about the differences between a combat/hunting weapon and sensible civilian defense weapon. I'm not telling anyone what they should carry. Sometimes I carry a 44 just because it's fun. I'll also rotate between 45, 9mm, 38. 357 and 22 mag. But that doesn't mean these categories don't exist. There is not a single "best" round… they're tools in your toolbox. You don't grab a wrench when you need a screwdriver. If I knew I was going to be in a defensive situation in public where theres a lot of bystanders I'd probably choose a 38. If I'm in a combat zone, or heading to the OK corral then I would opt for either high capacity, or magnum power. There's nothing wrong with 45 or 9mm. It comes down to what you're good at shooting and what your life situation is. A 12 gauge with magnum slugs for home defense in a house with a family and family members in bedrooms around the house isn't what I would choose, but that's me. The only thing I recommend is being realistic about how much penetration and target energy you need for your situation.
Speer Gold Dot JHP's, baby. They are amazing. I run them in my 1911, PCC, and I have this weird .45 ACP REVOLVER (Charter Arms Pitbull / not my fave; and don't shoot it sans gloves. LOL).
Nan, I love your videos. So realistic. My opinion about folks insisting on 230 gr 45acp fmj is a fair amount of 1911 45acp pistols operate almost 100% with this rounds. Other 45acp pistols other than 1911 design operate 100% with other bullet weight and design, making 45acp with those bullets FANTASTIC. I have talked to people who are a lot more into firearm than I, and, some say they charge recoil (?) spring to shoot lighter weight 45acp bullets, to get a 100% operation dependability. My take is 45acp 230 gr fmj has put a LOT of folks in hospital or grave. I'll keep using my Remington R1 1911 45acp. But, I can't get a 100% function guarantee using any jhp, but I get 99% function with 230 gr fmj. My reply to 45acp 230 gr fmj nay sayers is " well stand back 50 feet and let me shoot you with one and tell me if it hurts ๐ "

It dropped high Filipinos better than the 38 revolver. It stopped people dead in there tracks by law enforcement who didn't want to carry a 357 magnum, but then the military adopted the Beretta and handgun qualifications increased so suddenly the 45acp sucked. Its harder to hit with due to recoil, it's heavier to carry a bunch ammo and with modern hollow points, 9mm is just as good. I love how most people will say for my money to stake my life on reliability has to be 100%. The never say just as good reliablity will do. All data material state, a one shot stop capability has been reported more with a 45 acp than 9mm, period! AI even tries to cover up the data by saying things like "not significantly higher". My thinking is why do bullet manufacturers develop 9mm to replicate 45 wound ballistics but don't try to make 45's react like 9mm. Huh… I carry 45 and extra mags, I don't feel undergunned or inconvenienced.
Anecdotally, people persist in their intended mayhem after being severed almost in half by a homeowner with a chain saw. But the vast majority of people; good guys or bad guys are checked by the mere presence of ANY bullet pointed in their direction. So, drive your old Honda, or your new Ferrari to work. If you keep the machine in good operating condition, with enough fuel (full tank not needed), youโll get there.

I watched a navy seal on someone else's channel and he said he has actually shot people with both, and he has never had to shoot a person more than once with a 45 and said he always has to with a 9mm. I carry a shield plus 9mm. I have been thinking about getting a 45
I think 45acp is like all calibers, the right weight and speed and its wicked. Good ammo equals good results. I'd like to see you compare OEM Glock barrel against aftermarket and see which has the higher velocity. I'll say the polygonal rifleing has higher speeds
I luv the 45acp. Ill never understand why ppl think a 230gr piece of lead going over 700fps isnt good enough ๐ I got hit in the chest with a small rock that got slung from a riding mower and i went down and stayed down for a min or 2. Now amp that up! I just dont get it!??๐

Interesting how the Inceptor ARX bullets never really caught on. At 118 grains in .45ACP, they have nice velocity.

I'll probably stick with Federal HST Law Enforcement 147 grain 9mm. Shot a 45 once in the 1990s, and it kicked like a mule.

On the Wilson Combat channel, Ken Hackathorne recommended 200gr for .45acp and 135gr for 9mm.
