This story isn’t just about self-defense.
It’s about how close Chicago came to turning a law-abiding man into either a criminal — or a victim who never made it home.
Police say a licensed concealed carry holder was confronted by two armed men demanding his belongings. He defended himself. One attacker was shot. No charges were filed.
That last part matters.
Because before 2014, this same man could have been arrested just for carrying the gun that saved his life. Not for using it. For having it.
If this happens a decade earlier, the law likely leaves him disarmed — facing two criminals, one gun, and no way out.
Same threat. Same criminals.
Different outcome — because the law finally changed.
That fight didn’t start in 2014.
It started with Otis McDonald, a 76-year-old Chicago resident who took the city to the Supreme Court after being told he couldn’t protect himself in his own home. His case forced Chicago to recognize that the Second Amendment applies to the people who live there — not just the criminals who ignore the law.
Even then, Illinois still refused to allow public carry, which is why it took years longer for citizens to legally defend themselves outside their homes.
That history is why this defensive gun use ended the way it did.
And it’s also why preparation matters.

Chicago has a crime problem because they have a law enforcement problem. The Mayors are anti police so the criminals run the city been like that since Capone era. NYC mayor Giuliani enacted stop and frisk and crime went down 70%. Other mayors modified and kept it in place.
The criminals aren't giving up their guns. Disarming the law-abiding only makes the terrified citizens more dependent on government for survival, which is the point.
Take a step back and realize the criminals learned the right answer a long time ago: ignore the law! I do it all the time knowing cops bleed like everyone else. If they’re going to be tyrants and ignore the constitution they deserve everything I’ve prepared for them.
I blonged to a spotsmans club in Wisconsin in the '90s that was on the Illinois border. We had members from the city of Chicago who had handguns. I'd point out to them handguns were illegal in the city of Chicago. Universally they would laugh at me and say: "Yea? So? Hehehehehehehehe!" Hehehehehehehehe.
My question is … how could the government, knowing the 2A makes it legal to carry a gun, allow ANY state to have such a law? Does the govt. want the division, the fighting and chaos or what!
It took being victimized several times for a man of this age to realize criminals don't follow the law, and gun bans only disarm the victim. This is the anti-gun brainwashing that infects so many people. Politicians know what criminals will do to an unarmed public, which is why they keep their armed security while taking away yours. Government wants dependents and fearful, cowering subjects, not an population of responsible, law-abiding adults that can fend for themselves, period!
I hate every time I hear permit holder like someone just having a gun is a criminal; the right is to bear arms and doesn’t say shit about needing governments permission first. This permit notion needs to go as it concedes a loss of rights, right from jump.
When people ask if I support the Second Amendment, I tell that that I do – With two exceptions: Blacks and women. Why? Black neighborhoods are among the safest in America. Those crime stats? Fake. And, for women, domestic violence is rare and even more rarely deadly. Women don't need a gun. Both blacks and battered women can just call the police, who are both timely and professional, right? Right? 👍
In Fl the stand your ground law says if you shoot to legally defend yourself from death or great bodily harm, you cannot be sued in civil court by the parents of the "good boys" you shot. Let us hope it is that way in Chicago
