I got hit square center chest with .45 at a USPSA event once. It was my last target of the stage (steel), and the full bullet was sitting right between my feet. Luckily the ricochet was fairly low velocity and just felt like a mild knuckle punch and only left a very small bruise. They pulled that target for the rest of the competition. Poorly set angle on the target and probably too close for steel. Important for stage designers to pay attention too.
thats closer then 10 yards, also looks like the steel is hanging by one chain or rope, which isn't good as it can easily cause ricochets in odd directions. that range looks terrible, I would suggest he was shooting soft steel, possibly using a steel core or some kind of cheap round or military surplus from somewhere. but definitely to close. also shooting downwards at the plate probably helped causing the ricochet.
I can be forgiving with a lot of things, but firearm safety is NOT one of them. I’ve had people think I’m being overbearing before with safety practices (pellet guns included), but mostly I’ve gotten thanks from my friends who I taught how to safely use firearms and hunt. You can never be too safe.
I live in the UK and know zero about guns. If someone stood me on this range with a gun, with that steel target I would have felt 100% safe… Not sure what I will now do with this information, but good to know.
would be interesting to know what kind of bullet it was because mine end up as lead pancakes that land 2 feet from the target so its really hard to imagine a whole bullet flying back at me with enough force to kill.
Why would you shoot at metal? He got himself killed it doesn’t take a genius to know that shooting at metal increases the chances of a bullet ricocheting and either critically injuring or killing you.
