I don’t care what direction the guy was going. He was nuts and had a deadly weapon. If he ran away he still had a deadly weapon. If he managed to escape or come across another “person walking their dog” then what? The cops would have been vilified for not stopping the guy. They did the right thing. The guys father was also an asshole.

Yes, I am 70 years old and had to look up gas station Katana too! So was this an "assault katana?" Poor guy wanted suicide by cop. Feel bad for his dad.
I disagree, I did not see the man running towards the officer, it looked to me he was running across the street, why would they arrest the father, not right. It's his son. You going to tell me John you wouldn't run towards your boy regardless. I think these cops were so scared , let's just shoot ask the questions later. Not justified imo.
This is just laziness by the police. They had plenty of time to deploy a taser first while the second officer covered with lethal. Straight up gunning him down immediately was not necessary. But the comment crowd likes seeing a good shooting. sad.
Sad. Mental health issues abound. The family of the crazy samurai must be devastated. Having said that: The samurai class in Japan was brought to a crashing end by farm boy peasants with firearms.
This is an example of why I could have never been a cop, and I wanted to be. Protocol doesn't allow for discretionary action. I guess, for a marksman, I could have put him down without ending his life. There was only the 2 cops, no civilians around, and a huge truck between them. No judgement, btw. Its just when I see the father standing there looking at his dead child, I know what my shooting choices would have been coming up against a Katana, and a madman. That is too much empathy, and drama for an effective police officer, I know. It kills me every time I see one of these videos, with a family member looking down at their dead loved one. I know I couldn't handle that on a daily basis. God bless these cops, and may they find the peace, and strength to deal with it all.
