May 28, 2014 — An 18-year-old Brooklyn resident has been shot to death by a retired NYPD officer, who says the teen tried to carjack him at gunpoint. 55 year old Derrick Bishop was on guard duty in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, sitting in his Benz 430, when 19-year-old Manuel Ocampo knocked on his driver’s side window. 2. Jan 25, 2016 — Two masked gunman got a taste of their own medicine when they tried to rob customers at a Columbia barber’s shop. 3. Apr 13, 2015 — Three armed men got more than they bargained for when they broke into the home of 49-year-old Dias Costa. 4. Oct 24, 2014 — Kenneth Byrd shot three home invaders night after they forced their way into his home and attempted to rape his 19-year-old granddaughter. Byrd was also struck by gunfire from the suspects in his home on Yedda Road in Lumberton, North Carolina. 5. Subscribe for new videos: http://goo.gl/SaufF4 Follow us on Instagram: @theywillkillyou 10: Ossian Sweet (1925) One of the earliest, yet the most shocking of all the self-defense cases are that of an African American Physician Ossian Sweet. When Ossian moved into the newly purchased house with his infant and wife, the neighbours weren’t too welcoming. In fear, Sweet arranged for police protection along with 7 of his brothers and acquaintances to move in. Famous attorney Clarence Darrow intervened and asked the jury to schedule another trial. The jury was still adamant about Ossian and his acquaintances until Darrow presented an excellent case of self-defense and they were forced to drop all charges against the Sweet family. 9: Faith M. Martin (2010) This continues to be the latest self-defense case that has been registered by the court on a large scale: Aurora Woman, Faith M. Martin. She was charged and had to spend 19 months in jail, away from her kids (age 3 and 7, then). The months of prison ended when Kane County Judge Timothy Sheldon finally looked into the matter and decided that Martin was not guilty. 8: Lena Baker (1944) One can imagine how unfortunate a situation it must have been for Baker to be a poor African resident with 3 kids to support in the town of Cuthbert, Georgia in the early 1940s. She started working for Ernest Knight, a white grist mill owner, as a nurse when he broke his hip. Soon, there were rumours in the time about them having relations beyond that of work. It was true, but not in the sense the town perceived it. 7: Danny Shay (1917) Danny Shay, a minor league baseball manager of the Milwaukee Brewers of the American Association, had an argument with a black waiter in Hotel English, Indianapolis. According to the witnesses, Shay was there with Gertrude Anderson and was complaining of unavailability of enough sugar in the bowl on his table to waiter Clarence Euell. In the hearing, Shay kept repeating that it was done in self-defense. The media and the community created a huge row of the scene. 6: John Pontolillo (2009) Hours before John Pontolillo had noticed a couple of video game consoles missing from his living room, that’s when he alerted the police who found no one in the area. Near midnight, when John heard strange noises near the garage, he grabbed the first thing he could – a 3 to 5-foot long razor sharp samurai sword – and went to investigate. In fear, he struck the intruder as soon as he sensed his presence in the dark 5: Nathaniel Hurt (1994) Nathaniel Hurt, a 61-year-old retired steel worker, was frustrated by the acts of a teenage gang. In a community fighting for survival, he tried his best to keep his neighbourhood free of pests. Hurt was charged; however one could hardly blame him. Major Sistrunk maintained that pelting of stones by a 13-year-old didn’t warrant his actions. Later, after 14 months in prison, he was acquitted by the Governor Parris N. Glendenning. 4: Odell Waller (1940) Like Lena Baker, Odell Waller was also an African American dweller of a white dominant town. This 25-year-old citizen of Gretna, Virginia was a sharecropper on the farm of Oscar Davis. On an instance when Davis refused to pay up Waller’s share of the money, Waller refused to work further. 3: Nancy Seaman (2004) A Farmington Hills, Michigan teacher decided to divorce her husband. A mother of 2, Nancy Seaman was the teacher in consideration and after 31 years, she decided she couldn’t take it any longer. She packed up her bags and rushed to the garage on the morning of May 10, 2004, followed by an angry husband Bob and his kitchen knife. She even went to school that day and did her duties nicely. 2: Winnie Ruth Judd (1931) A 26-year-old married medical secretary, Judd lived in Phoenix with her two girlfriends Agnes Anne LeRoi and Hedvig Samuelson. When the shipping guy of the train she was travelling in noticed the foul smell, he turned over both the trunks to officials. The officials were horrified at the sight that met their eyes. To the jury, she said that both her female companions were jealous of her association with Halloran. She also tried to testify against Halloran in a hearing but with his influences, he got rid of the charges. 1: Rachel Wade (2009) Rachel Wade, a 19-year-old dweller of the Pinellas Park, was responsible for what happened to Sarah Ludemann, an 18-year-old of the same town, in the name of self-defense – and all that for an ex-boyfriend! Florida’s “Stand YOUR Ground” law that states that an individual may resort to moves in order to save themselves was questioned big time after this incident. It all happened when Josh Camacho, a young man of the same area, broke up with Rachel and started dating Sarah.
