'STAND ON GUARD' LAW: Liberals pressed on self-defense rights after Toronto violent home invasion
Home invasions are up 50% in Toronto, but can Canadians legally defend themselves in their own homes?
In this November 2, 2026 Question Period, Conservative MPs Michael Guglielmin and Frank Caputo confront Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree over two proposed laws: the Safe at Home Act—which would introduce mandatory minimum sentences of 5 years up to life imprisonment for home invasions—and the Stand On Guard Law to protect the right to self-defense.
Citing a recent violent attack where a family was assaulted in their residence, the opposition demands to know why Ottawa won’t back these measures, while the government points to existing criminal justice and bail reforms.

People should be allowed to defend themselves in their own home. If you illegally enter someone's house and they kill you, thats a you problem and it could have been avoided BY NOT BREAKING INTO SOMEONE'S HOME!
There is not debate, governments do not have any right to tell me if or how or when I can defend my home or loved ones. As long as I do hunt them down if they flee after they are warned.
