I have been walking regularly for a long time, often out at night, with a bright flashlight and a "walking stick" that is 1 1/2 inch diameter, 24 inch long piece of medium heavy dowel. It is really for dogs, but even if there were no dogs I'd carry it anyway. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
As for places you can't carry the stick, you can carry a pen but you have to have you three fingers over , and your pinky under so the pen does not slide out of your hand when you strike with it.
Next , when a jab punch comes at you face , you can jab the short stick into their ribs as their ribs are close to you then your skull to them , provided you are standing up.
This works well if the other guy is your height or a little taller then you.The stick gives you extra reach, but if the other guy is two feet taller then you , it won't work.
This concept works barehanded if the other guy is around your height .
What comes to mind is if you are gripping the middle, or a complete reverse grip ,you have a tool for block/blending knives thrusts , and you can reap grab at elbows .
My dog who I go everywhere with I tell any body who asks what's with stick?…I say it's the dogs throwing stick, I also make sure sure the leaves some fang marks on the stick, greetings from Northern Ireland.

I like Grandmaster Ed Parker's measurement for stick length. He professed that the length of the stick you carry should be cut to distance from your elbow to the tip of your middle finger, plus 1 fist. In my case, that comes out to 23 inches. This stick length formula makes the stick long enough for decent range, but short enough to where the stick doesn't smack into your body as you're moving it.
I picked up a 36 inch oak stick like this at the lumber yard – sanded the one edge smooth and varnished it, let it set and dry for 2 days, then tossed that shit it the garage and got at Glock 17
Decades ago I 'made' one of these to carry in the car. I drilled both ends about 3 to inches deep and inserted a round non-metalic fishig weights. Filled the ends with wood-filler, then rounded and sanded them smooth. painted the baton with black woodlaquer. Practice with it regularly.
A,B,C + 4’ one dia., East Tennessee hickory, and the same with a 18” piece, too. A walking stick with a rubber cap end(cane bottom cap), is a medical device (aka, 1 to 1-1/4” dia, hickory). Should the ends have a chamfer on them, seems like they should to avoid actual cutting or tearing of the skin.
