LIVE! Karmelo Anthony Guilty: Why Self-Defense Failed | Cody Thomas + Dr. Patrice Berry
Tonight on Courtroom Confidential, Josh Ritter is joined by Court TV’s Cody Thomas to break down the verdict in the Karmelo Anthony murder trial.
A jury found Karmelo Anthony guilty of murder in the fatal stabbing of Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas track meet. The defense argued self-defense, but the jury rejected that claim and convicted Anthony.
Cody Thomas was inside the courtroom and brings firsthand reporting from court as Josh and Cody discuss the verdict, the testimony, the defense strategy, the prosecution’s case, and why the self-defense argument failed.
Then, Dr. Patrice Berry from @DrPatriceBerry joins Josh to discuss the psychology behind the Karmelo Anthony case and the latest developments in the federal case against DeCarlos Brown, who has now been found incompetent at the federal level about a month after being found incompetent at the state level in the murder of Iryna Zarutska.
Join us LIVE for analysis of the Karmelo Anthony verdict, what happened inside the courtroom, what comes next after the guilty verdict, and the latest in the DeCarlos Brown federal case.

As a psychologist, I can't help but feel like we're missing the bigger picture here. This isn't just about headlines; it's deeply psychological. We're talking about defense mechanisms and socio-pathological behaviors—a reflection of underlying mental health challenges that many African-Americans face.
Every day, we witness the consequences of a lack of conflict resolution skills in our schools. It's alarming! Just because someone becomes a parent doesn’t automatically mean they know how to parent. This fundamental issue lies at the heart of many struggles we see today.
What's even more troubling is the disparity in outrage. If the crime we were discussing were black-on-black, would it draw the same attention? Statistics show that 85% to 90% of Black homicide victims are killed by Black offenders, resulting in approximately 2,500 to 3,000 precious lives lost every year. So, where’s the outcry?
While it seems everyone is eager to boost their ratings by discussing this case, let’s not forget: this isn’t entertainment; it’s a tragedy reflecting a much larger issue that demands our attention.
Carmelo Anthony's parents started a GoFundMe page… They raise a little bit over 600,000… What did they do?… They bought themselves a Cadillac Escalade and a home.. unfortunately none of that money went to their son's defense let that sink in😮😮
I'm not in favor of either side in this case I don't know everything surrounding this case. But Wow I didn't know that it was two 6 foot brothers starting trouble with one 5 foot plus kid . If the the tables were turned and it was Carmelo and his 6 foot brother starting trouble with a 5' plus white kid. And Carmelo would have been the one that had gotten stabbed and died. Would everything still be exactly the same? Also is it ok to go around starting trouble with smaller kids. On purpose mind you. In no way is that an excuse to stab someone. But neither is starting trouble with others. More so when they are smaller than you. Is that regular behavior of the kid that died. No one is concerned about any of that? How long do you think one could go around acting like that until something happens. Go around looking for trouble . You ever think that one day you just might find it. I'm not saying that to excuse what happened. I want to be clear on that. But that's one good reason to not go looking for trouble and especially on purpose because you never know what the other person is capable of doing. Not to mention it's just not RIGHT . I don't want to hear or find out that one of my kids was the one that was going around looking to start trouble with others and especially on purpose. I would be quick to tell them not to be that way and to stop that and don't be surprised if you find what you're looking for and don't come crying when you get your self into trouble for acting like that. That's not to say I agree with anything that has happened. Some are saying that if the kid would not have pulled out the knife none of this would have happened. Wow unbelievable Really? Where is the accountability? If the first kid and his brother would have never started any trouble this would have never happened and the kid would still be alive. The kid just so happened to start trouble with the wrong kid it turns out. And I don't mean any disrespect to anyone
I'm not saying that I am in favor of either side I don't know everything surrounding the case. From what I see it looks like one kid is looking to start some trouble and one kid was trying to avoid trouble and I didn't see or hear anything about that. Not to say that I agree with what happened. I know that if the kid that was starting trouble would not have been looking for trouble he would still be alive. Again I am not in favor of either side I'm just telling the truth. Also what if the tables were turned would everything still be looked at exactly in the same way as it is right now? If Carmelo would have been the one that started the trouble and ended up being the kid that was stabbed and died. Because if there is anything to be learned from this. Don't go out looking for trouble especially on purpose because you might find it. And I don't mean any disrespect I am only saying that hey you never know what the other person is capable of. I don't believe he should have stabbed the kid . I also don't believe the other kid should have been starting trouble especially on purpose . It appears that Carmelo went as far as to warn the other kid that was starting trouble to stop and to leave him alone. And the kid refused and continued to harass Carmelo. Let's not ignore all the issues involved in this case because by addressing them could be the thing that could save lives. There's nothing to be said about my comment that is or will change anything that I have said. The truth is the truth like it or not agree with it or not the truth is the truth. The same thing goes even if it were my kid in either side of this case.
I don't think he should have gotten 35 yrs however, he must pay the price for his actions. Just sad nobody wins at the end of the day an there is a mother grieving the lost of her son. I try my best to be fair to the best of my ability you just can't allow him to walk free.
Glad Anthony was found guilty. He shouldn't have brought a knife to a track meet. He shouldn't have been under that tent to begin with. He was looking for trouble to begin with. He used excessive force for self defense.
Black American & Tutor here: I guess I'm one of the rare people who genuinely thinks Kamelo was Wrong & it wasn't self defence 🤷🏽. As a school worker: it's a well known that Weapons, Knives & pistols are Completely Banned & Illegal on School Property — having a weapon is a Major Violation and a kid can get arrested in school for it. Kamelo being 17 Knew That..His life wasn't in danger — he had Opportunity to leave the area & he was surrounded by Coaches & Adults he could have asked for help. Schools are Protected spaces : Kamelo had plenty of chances to leave & ask Adult for help, if he felt unsafe….I genuinely am Surprised this became a racial issue!, I'm genuinely surprised many black people are So Upset and feel this was an injustice — he had a Knife at School! Am I missing something???. ..At most, yes the white kids were probably rude to him by asking him to leave in the Rain– but in reality he didn't belong in the Tent, sorry.. Yes the white kids should have left him alone if he was Quiet– but they're high school kids— and kids often make d*mb decisions, kids argue & fight sometimes , Which is Why weapons are Banned at School!! 🤦🏽. I've seen tons of kids fight at school- it's a part of growing up-, but it shouldn't lead to m-der At School!!…Sorry, but the young man is d-ed, he has a Twin- it wouldn't be fair to Metcalfs parents for Kamelo to skate out of Court while they suffer , sorry… My heart goes out to Metcalf's Parents & brother, this is Horrible tragedy, God bless them.

Tgat closing argument scenario re enforced the prosecutions case. You cannot bait a man to his death and walk.
Too bad you guys didn't do any background on this. He wasn't there because he was a participant at the track meet.He was there just because
Cody is the best
