The worst cartridges for self defense

Do you carry a gun for self defense? Not all rounds are created equal!

Ain Stolkiner says:

Americans just love killing people, don't they?

jaedbl67 says:

You're talking caliber, not cartridges.  When you got to the 40 caliber as next to the worse, I knew you were limited in knowledge.

Crazy colt says:

Love the videos and new subscriber so pointing that out right now. I'm curious with what your opinion on golden sabre. I carry a 357 and I've got boxes of this stuff. Shoots accurately but haven't done any other studying onit. Worth it ?

digital1911 says:

I kind of agree with 2 and thank you for talking about gimmicky ammo. I'm happy with a bonded hollow point. I was about to get butt hurt about your second spot but I'm pretty much with you with 9mm being equal to .40 in general effectiveness. I'm wrecking that -0 / 10ring with 40 or 9 so Im not really concerned adjust as long as I don't have to pay for the ammo. Shot placement is key. My office uses Glock 22s and I'm glad I can use a SW 442 as a backup. We may be switching to 9mm because we had some great recruits in our academy but they couldn't score the minimum with a Glock 22. I use to be very critical of law enforcement with sub-par shooting ability but as time goes on I'm more concerned with what's going on between their ears.

If I was back in a war zone again, I'll want a .45 since we can't use hollowpoint.

Thanks for the video brother.

mozzberg says:

I would have bet the 38 special would have been on this list. Well done

Proud Veteran says:

Like your videos Airman…but I like my G27. Hey we carried the 38 in the USAF for decades.

drn8mor says:

Caleb, love your videos. what's your opinion on the Hornady critical defense rounds in 9mm? Is that gimmick ammo?

Dale Wyatt says:

Thanks for your comments about the .40. Like you I've shot 10's of thousands of round of 40 in competition but from a personal defense standpoint it falls in the cracks. The 9 will give you the same performance with more capacity and better shoot ability. The 45 acp gives you better performance.

Todd W. Perry says:

You might want to read the 180 grain FMJ with a silicon front underlayment .40 caliber tests that the USAF did with the Beretta 90-Two before you make a statement that "when the 40 was designed, we didn't know about pistol caliber wounds". The test were more devastating than both 9mm and 45ACP. Spend a little more time reading and a little less time talking.

Zachery Hole says:

Anyone that says a 40 s&w is worse than a 25 acp or 32 acp Has to be trolling us or borderline retarded I think it's just a James Yeager tactic Say stupid things so people will watch your videos If that's it then kudos to him

Karl Schulz says:

So knowing your #1, do you have the same opinion about Lehigh Defense Xtreme Defender (not the penetrator)?

Thomas Brown says:

I love my S&W MP40

R Sjr says:

40sw in the right ammo is more than enough and superior to the 9mm with the same type of ammo. Not sure what ballistic workshops you have attended but you lost me after that. Higher capacity has nothing to do with terminal ballistics. Also the CCI Stinger hyper-velocity hollow point in 22LR is more effective than about any 25 acp other than glazer safety slugs. You must thing double ought buckshot is more effective than a rifled slug also. I mean no insult, but self defense to me means rounds that are more effective to protect yourself and science does not back your theory that the 40sw isn't a good defense round. In the right ammo you have a larger object traveling almost as fast and your capacity argument doesn't jive because the majority of handguns that offer that caliber offer high capacity in the 40 as well. My duty M&P loaded with speer gold dot bonded ammo with 16 rounds not effective? That's not the truth at all. Also your opinion on Civil defense ammo is way off. It defeats body armor at least the one's in certain rounds they offer do, go watch the video it's on military arms channel. Speed does have an effect on trauma and energy transfer that's not a gimmick. You say it will hit skin then just not even penetrate but it defeats body armor? Think about that statement. I like some of your videos but you have no clue about ballistics. When you go into rifle ammo you do realize it's the speed that makes it effective don't you?

itscold says:

+gun nuts media Would you recommend Winchester ranger t in 9mm over Winchester pdx1. I can get ranger for cheaper and I know ones bonded and ones not but just seeing what's a better option in general.

CHEEKIEST BREEKI says:

Does the Lehigh "Xtreme Penetrator" fall under the gimmick ammunitions?

Lance Elliott says:

Im a 9mm fan but listing the 40 s&w  as worse than a 32, 25, or 22? And you want people to take you seriously? What a joke.

Will Harrison says:

You are right,I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings ,you probably didn't have anyone to teach you better.

Tom Crawford says:

Caleb, I tend to agree with most of the points you made. But once again, I think you may have gone off the rails just a little bit with the young man's penchant for overstatement. I used to have it myself.

Specifically I am speaking with regard to the .40 caliber. Due to its popularity with law enforcement for 20 years, there are tons of people who still have them. Those people are by no means poorly armed, if they shoot their guns well, and many do. So while the round might not be your preference, I would not agree that it is one of the five "Worst cartridges for self-defense."

Like it or not, many viewers see you as an authority figure on guns and self-defense. Given that, you might want to think twice before shaking someone's confidence in the gun they happen to have, when it really will get the job done. Just an opinion for your consideration.

Tom big says:

I agree 100% with this

jungledoc75 says:

You do realize that through this video you said it is better to carry a 22LR, or 25 ACP, or 32 then a 40cal, even though you said 40 cal is basically equivalent to 9mm and 45acp . I like your videos , but the logic in this one is flawed. Your video would make much more sense if you put the 40 as the #5 worst caliber.

Anselmo Garcia says:

How do You feel about the 10mm?

DonziGT230 says:

I'm cleaning my Beretta Model 20 .25acp as I listen to this and it's still going back in my pocket holster because it's the only gun I have that I'm willing to carry all the time, but I do know that it's far from ideal.

Michael Trotter says:

This is just my no knowledge thought. 32 acp is a great backup. Love my tomcat. The 40 is great for ccw. How many rounds would you fire in that situation. At the range I agree it's not fun like the 45 to shoot a lot. I mostly do agree with everything you say here though. I think your pretty much right on. Again I admit I don't know much. And trust me when I say this.

Grokmog Skullsmasha says:

i agree with most of this list, i carry a m57 tok because its all i have. and i was wondering if you think it would be effective in self defence, its a old cartridge but i do have prvi hollow points for it. its chambered in 7.62×25

Drumber Gunnerer says:

Yes!!! Liberty ammo sucks! I agree 100%. 8" of penetration AFTER the bullet has broken apart into 6 parts, bull shit… Stupid… I have to admit tho, I carry a 9mm Springfield XDS.. I believe he may hate Springfield… So, I enjoy it and it works for me because of the palm safety (people hate it or like it). I like it due to the way I carry, I wanted a safety mech that I didn't have to think about turning off.. Springfield meets that need.. I would never ever carry Liberty ammo for any reason, rather FMJ than that crap..

ramses1079 says:

I was glad you stopped at .40 cause my Glock 20 already has self esteem issues as is! I've never even owned anything under a 9mm and the only two revolvers I owned were both .357 (S&W and unfortunately Taurus) so I can't argue or debate the smaller "calibers." But do I sense the same "it hurts my wrist when it goes bang" complaint the FBI gave for switching from .40 back to 9mm?? *disclaimer* I'm no rabid fanboy or caliber snob, so my comments are typed with a twinge of sarcasm……not to be confused with the term "butthurt" everyone uses nowadays! Oh and enough mustache switching and head shaving, bring back JoAnn! lol j/k

StJohn724 says:

I really enjoy and glean as much as I can from your videos. Keep up the good stuff. I live where magazines are limited to a max of 10 rounds. Would your list (or concept) change due to magazines not giving you the more is better advantage?

Keith Hollar says:

The Glaser Safety Slugs were created in the '70's to meet a specific scenario, an Air Marshal shooting a hijacker aboard an airplane. The primitive hollow points of the era didn't always perform like they were designed to and somtimes acted like FMJ.

Matt Watrous says:

Thank you for the interesting and relevant information. As someone else posted, I would like to see/hear your thoughts on 9 mm vs. .45 ACP for personal defense.
